One concept many students misunderstand in Strength of Materials is bending stress in beams. A lot of people memorize the bending equation without first understanding what is physically happening inside the beam when it bends under load.
When a beam carries transverse loads, it bends. During this bending process, different layers within the beam experience different types of stress. The upper fibres of the beam are usually compressed, while the lower fibres are stretched and experience tension. Between these two regions lies the neutral axis, where the bending stress becomes zero.
This is why bending stress varies across the depth of the beam. The farther a fibre is from the neutral axis, the greater the bending stress acting on it. That is also why the maximum bending stress occurs at the extreme top and bottom fibres of the beam section.
Understanding this physical behaviour is very important because once you truly understand how the beam behaves internally, formulas stop looking abstract and begin to make practical sense.
Engineering becomes much easier when you stop seeing equations as symbols alone and start connecting them to actual structural behaviour.

One thing that surprises many engineering students is how a small misunderstanding at the foundation level of a topic can affect everything that comes after it.
For example, if you don’t properly understand support reactions, you will likely struggle with shear force diagrams. If shear force diagrams are weak, bending moment diagrams become more difficult. Then suddenly topics like slope and deflection start looking impossible.
That is why engineering should be learned progressively. Most advanced topics are simply combinations of smaller concepts working together.
Many times, students think they have a “hard topic problem” when in reality they have a “foundation problem.”
The stronger your fundamentals become, the easier advanced engineering starts feeling.
This is why at Tutor Jerry Academy, we focus heavily on breaking concepts down step by step instead of rushing straight into calculations.
Strong engineering understanding is built layer by layer.

One thing many students don’t realize early enough is that engineering rewards understanding more than memorization.
You can memorize formulas for an exam and still struggle badly once the question changes slightly. That is why some students panic immediately they see a question presented in a different format, even though the concept is actually the same.
Real understanding starts when you begin to see the behaviour behind the equations. In Structural Analysis, for example, a structure reacts based on load paths, support conditions, stiffness, and member behaviour not because a formula magically appears from nowhere.
The students who become very strong over time are usually the ones who stop asking only: “What formula should I use?”
And start asking: “What is this structure actually doing?”
That shift changes everything.
At Tutor Jerry Academy, our focus has always been helping engineering students move beyond memorization into real understanding through simplified explanations, worked examples, and practical problem-solving approaches.
Engineering becomes less intimidating when the concepts finally start making sense.

One thing nobody prepares you for in engineering is how long it can take before a concept finally clicks.
There are topics you will read today, read again tomorrow, watch videos on, solve examples on and still not fully understand immediately. At some point, it can even make you start doubting yourself.
I remember there were times I could follow a lecturer perfectly in class, but the moment I faced a question alone, my confidence disappeared. Everything suddenly looked unfamiliar. That experience is more common among engineering students than people admit.
What I eventually realized is that understanding in engineering is not always instant. Sometimes your brain is still processing the logic gradually. The students who eventually become very good are not always the fastest learners; many times, they are simply the ones who stayed consistent long enough for the concepts to connect.
That is why comparing yourself to others too much can be dangerous. Everyone has that one topic that took them longer to understand.
The important thing is to keep showing up, keep practicing, and keep asking questions until things become clearer.
One day, what once looked impossible will start feeling normal.
