DG NYSC URGES CORPS MEMBERS TO CONTRIBUTE TO NATION-BUILDING

The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, has charged Corps Members to dedicate their intellectual capacity, creativity, and energy to the development of Nigeria.

He gave the charge while addressing Corps Members deployed to Bauchi State for the 2026 Batch 'B' Stream I service year at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Wailo, in Ganjuwa Local Government Area of the state.

Brigadier General Nafiu urged the Corps Members to be proud of their country, stressing that Nigerians must take responsibility for building the nation rather than expecting others to do so.

He reminded them that, as young, vibrant, and energetic citizens, they have a critical role to play in advancing the nation and consolidating the achievements of previous generations.

"We all desire a beautiful country—a nation where we can raise our families and proudly call home, a country where things work efficiently. The question is: who will build this country for us? We must work hard to sustain and improve on the legacy of our forefathers.

"You, the youth, constitute more than 60 per cent of Nigeria's population. Therefore, the responsibility of building the nation of your dreams rests largely on your shoulders," he said.

Explaining further, the Director General said the Federal Government established the NYSC in 1973 to harness the strength and potential of Nigerian youths for nation-building. He noted that the Scheme was created as part of the post-civil war policy of Reconciliation, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction initiated by General Yakubu Gowon.

"Following the civil war, the government adopted the policy of Reconciliation, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction. It then became necessary to establish a scheme that would enable young graduates to serve for one year in states other than their states of origin, thereby promoting national integration and unity".

🔹 What Does a State Code Number Comprise?
A typical State Code looks like this:
LA/26B/1234
📖 Breakdown:
🔸 LA – State of Deployment Code
Represents the state where you are serving like:
LA = Lagos State
KN = Kano State
RV = Rivers State
🔸 26 – Service Year
Indicates the year of service (2026 in this example).
🔸 B – Batch
Shows the NYSC batch you belong to.
A = Batch A
B = Batch B
C = Batch C (if applicable)
🔸 1234 – Serial Number

A unique number assigned to distinguish you from other corps members in the same state and batch.

🎯 Importance of the State Code Number:

✅ Used when receiving allowances and other NYSC benefits.
✅ Helps identify corps members during service year activities.

Your State Code Number is usually issued after successful registration in the orientation camp and remains your official NYSC identity throughout the service year.

Always memorize it and use it correctly on all NYSC-related documents.

NYSC DG COUNSELS CORPS MEMBERS ON SAVINGS, INVESTMENTS

Corps Members have been advised to ensure they save fifteen percentage of their monthly allowance as part of personal savings and investment strategies.

The Director General of National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, gave this advice while interacting with the 2026 Batch 'B' Stream I Corps Members in Plateau and Gombe NYSC Orientation Camps.

He said the Scheme had made enough opportunities available for them to acquire skills through the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, adding that they were to ensure they acquire at least a skill or two during the service year that would make them self-employed and thereby create jobs for others.

General Nafiu also disclosed that many of their predecessors that acquired skills while serving are had become business owners in different sectors of society.

He cautioned that it would be shameful for them to go back home after the service year and remain idle.

The Director General also appealed to the Corps Members to embrace hard work, cultivate meaningful relationships and use the social media to create good contents that would project both the image of the NYSC and Nigeria.

He warned that anyone among them that violated NYSC’s rules and regulations would be sanctioned.

“Cut down on unnecessary use of social media. Create good contents, make friends and nurture relationships. Nigeria's ours, Nigeria we serve"

"You have to learn faithfulness in little things, if you are posted to a school, diligently teach your children", the DG advised.

The NYSC Plateau State Coordinator, Mr Jonathan Yavala, said the Corps Members had been actively participating in the Orientation Camp activities, and had also exhibited good character since they arrived Camp.

He added that all Camp officials had been working in synergy to ensure that the objectives of the Orientation Course were achieved.
