Let’s talk about Key Signatures (the foundation of scales, chords, and progressions).

🎼 What is a Key Signature?

A key signature is the set of sharps ( #) or flats (♭) written at the beginning of a staff that tells you:

1. Which notes are sharp or flat throughout the piece.

2. What key (major/minor) the music is in.

🔑 Two Things to Remember

Sharps ( #): F #, C #, G #, D #, A #, E #, B #

Flats (♭): Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Cb, Fb

They always appear in the same order.

🎵 Major Key Signatures

Sharp Keys (add sharps going clockwise on the Circle of Fifths)

0 sharps → C Major

1 sharp → G Major

2 sharps → D Major

3 sharps → A Major

4 sharps → E Major

5 sharps → B Major

6 sharps → F # Major

7 sharps → C # Major

Flat Keys (add flats going counterclockwise on the Circle of Fifths)

0 flats → C Major

1 flat → F Major

2 flats → Bb Major

3 flats → Eb Major

4 flats → Ab Major

5 flats → Db Major

6 flats → Gb Major

7 flats → Cb Major

🎶 Relative Minors

Every major key has a relative minor (same key signature, different tonal center).
👉 To find it: go down a minor third (3 half steps) from the major.

Examples:

C Major ↔ A minor

G Major ↔ E minor

F Major ↔ D minor

Bb Major ↔ G minor

✨ Quick Tricks

For sharp keys: the key is ½ step above the last sharp.
👉 Example: 2 sharps (F # and C #). Last sharp is C #. Go up ½ step → D Major.

For flat keys: the key is the second-to-last flat.
👉 Example: 3 flats (Bb, Eb, Ab). Second-to-last is Eb → Eb Major.

(Exception: 1 flat = F Major)

✅ Example in Use:
If you see 4 sharps in the key signature:

The sharps are F #, C #, G #, D #.

Last sharp = D #, go up ½ step → E Major.
