ASPIRE AGENDA ON THE MOVE! BMU HOSTS ACCREDITATION VERIFICATION COMMITTEE FOR RADIOGRAPHY AND RADIATION SCIENCE PROGRAMME

On Wednesday, June 17, 2026, Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) hosted a four-member verification team from the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria (RRBN) for the accreditation exercise of the University’s Radiography and Radiation Science Programme.

The exercise formed a critical part of the University’s commitment to academic excellence and quality healthcare education, focusing on the assessment of facilities, personnel, learning resources, and clinical training environments available for the training of future radiographers.

The Vice Chancellor of Bayelsa Medical University, Professor Dimie Ogoina, a Time 100 Honouree, received the team and reaffirmed the University’s commitment to the ASPIRE Agenda. He highlighted several strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening medical education, including the integration of Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, and other technological innovations into teaching and learning.

Professor Ogoina noted that the establishment of the Department of Radiography and Radiation Science in 2023 reflects the University’s dedication to expanding opportunities for healthcare education and producing globally competitive professionals.

He further assured the team that the University remains open to constructive criticism and recommendations that will support its vision of becoming a globally recognized institution.

The Team Lead, Professor Kenneth Kalu Agwu, expressed appreciation for the Vice Chancellor’s remarks and emphasized that the Board’s mission is to promote and sustain high standards in radiography education across Nigeria.

“Our aim is never to pull down a school but to continue to raise the standard of radiographers in the country by ensuring the quality of their education remains high,” he stated.

The team also acknowledged the significant role the programme could play in strengthening healthcare delivery at the state, regional, and national levels through the production of highly skilled radiography professionals.

The he verification team commenced an extensive assessment of the University’s facilities, BMU Yenagoa Campus Library materials and the University’s Virtual Reality Laboratory.

During the inspection, the Registrar of the Board and member of the verification team, Dr. Idris Garba, described the Virtual Reality Laboratory as a “good innovation and commendable.”

The team toured the University’s Sampou Campus, visiting the Department of Radiography and Radiation Science. Inspection was carried out in the Head of Department’s office, lecturers’ offices, X-ray demonstration room, ultrasound demonstration room, lecture halls, student hostels, and the campus sick bay. The assessment focused on evaluating the quality of infrastructure and the learning environment available to students.

As part of the accreditation exercise, the team also visited the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH), Okolobiri, one of the University’s major clinical training centres. During the visit, the team paid an unscheduled inspection to BMU students undergoing clinical postings and observed them actively engaged in their professional training.

The verification team met with the Chief Medical Director of NDUTH, Professor Johnbull Jumbo, alongside principal officers of the hospital and the Radiology Department. Discussions focused on clinical training opportunities and the prospects of internship accreditation for radiographers. The Board assured the hospital management of a smooth process toward achieving such accreditation.

The team inspected the hospital’s radiology facilities and confirmed that practising radiographers within the institution possessed up-to-date professional licences. They commended the positive impact experienced professionals could have on students’ clinical development.

The verification team visited the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, where the team was received by the Chief Medical Director, Dr. James Enimi Omietimi. Dr. Omietimi highlighted the Memorandum of Understanding between FMC Yenagoa and Bayelsa Medical University and emphasized the importance of internship accreditation in improving the quality of radiography graduates within the state. He also assured the team of the availability and quality of diagnostic equipment accessible to students during their clinical training.

He noted that the radiology department has historically experienced manpower shortages and expressed appreciation for BMU’s contribution towards addressing the gap through the training of competent professionals. The team toured the facility and assessed the available equipment and training resources.

The final phase of the inspection took place at the Bayelsa Diagnostic Centre located within the University’s Yenagoa Campus. There, the team inspected the Digital X-ray Unit, CT Scan Unit, and Ultrasound Unit. The team also visited the Gross Anatomy Laboratory within the Medical Laboratory Science Complex and reviewed students’ attendance records and academic engagement, which they described as an essential component of medical education.

Throughout the exercise, members of the RRBN verification team provided valuable recommendations aimed at further strengthening existing structures and resources. They expressed satisfaction with the facilities, equipment, maintenance culture, and quality assurance mechanisms observed during the assessment.

The accreditation exercise underscores the growing reputation of Bayelsa Medical University as a leading institution for healthcare education and reflects its continued commitment to producing competent, competitive, and globally relevant healthcare professionals.
