It is certain that everyone would agree with the concept of education being the key factor and foundation for the development of human kind, society and a nation as a whole. Nelson Mandela has once rightly quoted -“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” However, even standing at 21st Century when people has conquered the impossible and stepped in Moon and Mars, Nepal is still struggling with the basic and it’s so saddening when children especially from rural areas at their prime learning period are harshly bound to do hard labor while they should be enjoying and learning in schools. Poverty and lack of awareness have been the root causes of it. And also lack of awareness and lack of value on education among the people are also the reasons for low attendances in schools.
It is clear that Nepal’s education system is not of better quality, especially in public schools. Studies reveal that there is very less degree of learning and teaching occurs in rural public schools. Even the results of 2071's School Leaving Certificate (SLC) often referred to IRON GATE, a final secondary level national examination illustrate the bleak reality of Nepal's public education system: only 41% of a total of 548,000 students who sat for the test passed it. Lack of facilities and dearth of trained teachers is the major culprit of poor quality of education in government schools. Almost in all the government schools there is a shortage of funds for learning tools such as extra classrooms, libraries, scientific equipment, laboratories, field work and research. Nepal spends very minimum sum of its national budget on education which was 6% in 2004, which was one of the lowest in the world.
While the public schools are dealing with all the limitations and complexities, the earthquake that shake the Nepalese soil turning around many people’s living graph on 25th April, 2015 followed by another jolt on May; these schools were no exception. Mainly the public schools in rural areas have weak foundation; their buildings are constructed in traditional approach with soil, woods and unbaked bricks which are more vulnerable during jolts. Many schools are closed down for months and most of schools came into operation in the temporary blocks which are again very weak in foundation.
Despite all these odds and current struggles for education in Nepal, we believe there are ways to remedy the situation. If the right people contribute from their end and if the efforts are coordinated with the support from government, International institutions and NGOs/INGOs, the better future for education in Nepal could be secured in couple of years.
Following workout, in our opinion should be made in macro level:
a) By gearing up the level of investment in the education sector from annual budget from government end and also cultivating the public-private partnership in education.
b) Partnership with the international institutions that are focused on education to get financial support, technological support and methodologically improvements.
c) Developing the mechanism to build the strong infrastructure that incorporates skilled manpower and physical facilities.
d) Emphasis from government on the roots such as poverty, lack of awareness should be given with the local bodies that threatening in the attendance of chillers in schools. The affirmative action for the disadvantaged group (Dalits, indigenous communities, and others) such as provision of scholarship & other facilities should be implemented effectively and its outcome must be monitored periodically.
