Ang katotohanan ay nanganganib na ang programang BS Forestry sa Pilipinas. Marami sa mga unibersidad na dating nag-aalok ng kursong ito ang tumigil na, at pangunahing dahilan nito ang kakulangan ng mga estudyanteng nais mag-enroll. Sa kasalukuyan, iilan na lamang ang nag-aalok ng BS Forestry. Sa tantiya ko, hindi na aabot sa 50 sa buong bansa.

Bakit nga ba umabot sa ganitong sitwasyon? Ito pa naman ang isa sa mga kursong pinakamahalaga para sa Pilipinas lalo na sa ngayon. Napakayaman natin sa likas na yaman, at dito dapat nakaugat ang ating lakas bilang isang bansa. Ganito rin ang sitwasyon ng BS Agriculture. Malawak ang ating lupain, kaya’t hindi dapat nagugutom ang mga Pilipino, at dapat mura ang bigas, gulay, at iba pang pagkain. Subalit hindi natin nagagamit nang tama ang ating yamang lupa at kagubatan na sana ay nagiging sandigan ng ating kaunlaran.

Isa sa mga nakikita kong dahilan ng pagbaba ng interes ay ang pananaw ng marami na mas “sosyal” o prestihiyoso ang ibang kurso, kaya’t iniiwasan ang Forestry at Agriculture. Ayaw ng karamihan na maputikan o ma-expose sa trabaho sa labas. Pangalawa, laganap ang paniniwalang kaunti ang kita at mahirap makahanap ng magandang trabaho kapag nagtapos sa BS Forestry o BS Agriculture. Ngunit, iba na ang panahon ngayon. Maraming nag-aantay na oportunidad kapag graduate ka ng BS Forestry at Agriculture. Napakarami.

Panahon na para itaas natin ang pagkilala at prestige ng mga kursong ito. Kung nais nating mapangalagaan ang ating kagubatan, lupa, at likas na yaman at kung tunay nating hangad ang kinabukasan ng ating bansa kailangan nating buhayin at suportahan ang Forestry at Agriculture. Please help me popularize BS Forestry throughout the country!

Licensed forester, plant researcher, entrepreneur, and content creator Ethan Hernandez is now known for his work in plant ecophysiology and his thriving online community of nearly a million followers.

But before all the degrees and recognition, Ethan was a boy sleeping in an abandoned train station who once spent 24 hours in jail for stealing food.

Ethan recently took to social media to share his extraordinary journey in the hopes of inspiring others.

Born to a family of farmers, Ethan knew from a young age that education was something he’d have to fight for. To finish high school, he worked as a dishwasher and bread packer. For college, he moved to Naga and worked as a janitor and house help while taking up Accountancy.

Hunger and exhaustion pushed him to his breaking point and he ended up in jail for stealing food just to survive.

"I don’t regret that moment," he writes, "because it taught me so much. And I believe God used even that low point to steer me in a new direction."

That direction eventually led him to Los Baños. Determined to earn a degree, he reached out to top universities and asked for a full scholarship in exchange for serving as a helper.

Shortly after, a lawyer from the University of the Philippines Los Banos reached out to him and had him take the UPLB entrance exam and field test. He was offered a slot in Forestry.

Balancing full-time studies with several jobs, Ethan powered through and eventually graduated cm laude. He went on to become a UPLB instructor, earned his master’s in Korea, and rose to the rank of Assistant Professor.

Today, he lives in a house he paid for, supports his family, and teaches the next generation about ecosystems and environmental care, both online and in the classroom.

“To everyone who helped me along the way, thank you from the bottom of my heart. This story is not just mine. It’s for every student, worker, and dreamer fighting against the odds,” he writes. “Don’t give up. You never know how far grit, kindness, and a little faith can take you.”
