๐ฅ NEW RELEASE: Spotlighting Agriculture in the PJPP 2026 Volume! ๐๐
We are proud to feature the newly published article of the Philippine Journal of Public Policy (PJPP) 2026 issue: "Institutional Choices in the Benguet Potato Value Chain" by Renz Venielle Lamayo (Department of Economics and Political Science, University of the Philippines Baguio). Produced with funding support from the UP CIDS Local Regional Studies Network X Cordillera Studies Center UP Baguio, this research provides critical insights into the economic Philippine agriculture.
Why do institutional choices matter? Using a Transaction Cost Economics framework, Lamayo explores the distinct dynamics between traditional middlemen networks and formalized contract farming in Benguetโwhich supplies over 75% of the country's potato demand.
Key Takeaways:
- The Traditional vs. Contract Divide: Evaluating how informal trading networks rely on local reputation and "disposers" (which can create credit dependency), whereas contract farming through cooperatives allows farmers to bypass middlemen and secure stable institutional buyers.
- The Power of Social Networks: Revealing that informal agreements persist because they minimize upfront transaction costs, utilizing community trust rather than formal legal enforcement to manage trading risks.
- Policy Paths for Fairer Markets: Outlining actionable steps to empower farmers, including expanding state-backed multipurpose credit, sustaining government market linkages (like KADIWA), upgrading cooperative management skills, and digitizing trading post price information to bridge bargaining gaps.
Continue your journey through the 2026 PJPP volume with this essential read on transforming our local agricultural supply chains.

๐๐๐ฌ๐ ๐: Day 1 of the 3rd KaMaG-Aral National Conference concluded with timely and critical conversations on citizenship, disinformation, political polarization, and civic education in the Philippines.
The plenary sessions featured Asst. Prof. Karin Shana Shana C. Bangsoy, MA, who discussed democratic citizenship under algorithmic influence; Atty. Cecilio D. Duka, who reflected on citizenship as a right or privilege; and Dr. Imelda B. Deinla, who examined the link between fake news susceptibility and political polarization among Filipino youth.
Assoc. Prof. Nestor F. Ulpindo, Managing Director of KaMaG-Aral, synthesized the key insights of the day, highlighting the urgent role of Araling Panlipunan educators and researchers in strengthening democratic citizenship in an age of digital influence and contested truths.
