Four foreign bus drivers officially began their service in Okinawa on December 23, marking a significant step in addressing Japan’s chronic driver shortage. Among them was 36-year-old Luarez The Ian Gloria from the Philippines, who admitted to feeling nervous during his first trip transporting passengers from Naha Airport to the popular Mihama American Village.

These drivers are part of a group of nine Filipino nationals hired by Tokyo Bus under the "Specified Skilled Worker" (No. 1) visa program, which was recently expanded to include the transportation sector. After obtaining their heavy-duty Class 2 licenses and completing rigorous internal training, they are now operating shuttle and sightseeing buses in both Tokyo and Okinawa.

During the inaugural trip, Ian was observed professionally assisting foreign tourists with IC card payments while navigating busy city traffic. This development is crucial as the industry struggles with a lack of personnel despite high tourist demand, and the company plans to further integrate foreign staff into regular local bus routes in the future.
