This June 19th, marks the 165th birthday of our National Hero, none other than Dr. Jose Rizal! The hero who persevered and served the Filipino people as the inspiration for unity, peace, and love for our country, leading to the peace that we now have today.

Dr. Jose Rizal, or Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonzo Realonda, is honored for his bravery in standing up against the oppressors in his time, dying at the age of 35 as a Hero on December 30, 1896.

His famous works which include the books "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo", let the Filipino people to awaken and gain encouragement to fight back against the oppressors for their rights and freedom that we wouldn't have today if not for our National Hero.

Dr. Jose Rizal fought without violence, instead through his writings. As the future generations, let us embody his quote "Kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan." Through our actions, let's take responsibility of the freedom that not only our National Hero fought for, but as well as all of the heroes that fought for our nation. Together, let's use our knowledge to pave the way for a brighter future for our country!

Before the official enshrinement of the 5th Philippine Sports Hall of Fame, here’s the story of a legendary court general who became a champion for the future of Philippine sports. 👑🇵🇭

Born in Maasin, Leyte, Ramon Sadaya Fernandez is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in Philippine basketball history. Nicknamed "El Presidente" for his exceptional leadership and sportsmanship, the University of San Carlos alumnus began his career in 1972 with the San Miguel Braves in the MICAA. He went on to forge an unmatched, two-decade PBA career across five franchises—Toyota, Manila Beer, Tanduay, Purefoods, and San Miguel Beer—winning a record 19 championships, capturing four MVP awards, and earning the retirement of his iconic No. 19 jersey.

Fernandez’s profound influence on national sports was solidified through his impactful tenure as Commissioner of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) from 2016 to 2022. Appointed during William Ramirez’s second term as chairman, he utilized his seat to champion systemic support for local athletes and drive grassroots initiatives across the archipelago.

Throughout his administrative career, he established himself as a fierce advocate for athletes' rights and a passionate champion of grassroots development, directly helping build up elite athletes who excelled globally, including skateboarder Margie Didal and karatekas Junna Tsukii and Jamie Lim. Through this vital administrative role, the basketball legend proved that his leadership extended far beyond the court — successfully transitioning from a master of the game to a true champion for the future of Philippine sports.

Hailing from Bago, Negros Occidental, Mansueto "Onyok" Velasco Jr. is one of the most celebrated figures in Philippine boxing history. Born into a formidable sporting family, he followed the Olympic path of his older brother, Roel Velasco, who won a bronze medal in 1992. Competing in the 48 kg category, Onyok established his own elite international standing by capturing a spectacular gold medal at the 1994 Asian Games.

Velasco’s career pinnacle came at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics in the men's light-flyweight event. He engineered a historic campaign, defeating Chih-Hsiu Tsai of Taiwan, Yosvani Aguilera of Cuba, Hamid Berhili of Morocco, and Rafael Lozano of Spain. Though he fell to Daniel Petrov in the final, Velasco secured a monumental Olympic silver medal that electrified the nation.

Following his triumphs in the ring, Velasco showcased rare versatility by successfully transitioning into the entertainment industry. Swapping his boxing gloves for show business, he carved out a popular second career as a comedian and occasional actor across several television sitcoms and series — solidifying his status as an enduring icon of both Filipino athletic greatness and pop culture.
