𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘰𝘴 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘶𝘮

I REMINISCE about my sixth grade days. My friends and I would play Chinese garter under the scorching afternoon sun.

We took turns jumping over the garter, carefully balancing ourselves as each level became higher and higher -- and so did the pressure.

I worried about whether I could clear the garter successfully and, more importantly, whether I could save my teammates when they failed.

Everyone depended on me because I was the "mother."

I did not fully understand what that role meant. I only knew that I had to keep going even when my legs were tired and my heart was anxious.

Years later, I encountered the same experience in college when I enrolled in the AB Political Science program of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) School of Arts and Sciences (SAS).

I carried that same quiet pressure within me. I constantly wondered whether I could survive the demands of the program and somehow help my classmates in my own little way as we navigated college life together.

There were days filled with exhaustion,
self-doubt,
sleepless nights,
and uncertainty.

So we carried on. Just like in Chinese garter, every challenge taught us to jump a little higher.

Sometimes we fell.
Sometimes we lost our balance.
Sometimes we doubted whether we could make the next leap.

Through our collective efforts, we survived every level together.

As I stand before this milestone, I realize that this achievement is more than just a figure on paper.

It is the embodiment of countless sacrifices.
It represents strength in moments of doubt and perseverance in the face of challenges and the courage to keep moving forward even when the next jump seems impossible.

It is not merely a grade.
It is a story,
A story of growth,
A story of becoming,
A story of synodality with my fellow SASsies.

And perhaps, a story of mothering so hard -- for myself and for others.

As I end my college journey with flying colors, I can proudly say that every leap was worth it.

But this is not the end.
Perhaps, this is only the beginning of another level of the Chinese garter --

A little higher,
A little scarier,
Yet filled with endless possibilities waiting for me to leap toward them once again.
