The University of the Philippines UP Cebu Statistics Program held its 2nd Student Research Colloquium on the Statistical Sciences on May 28, 2026, at the UP Cebu Lawak Sinehan.
Carrying the theme โShaping the Future through Statistical Insights,โ the event welcomed researchers, faculty, and students from UP Cebu and Cebu Technological University (CTU) for a data-driven exchange of ideas and discussions on the applications of statistical science across disciplines.
Dr. Alvin Roxas, Dean of the College of Science (COS), opened the morning session with a message underscoring the interdisciplinary nature of statistics, telling participants โYou have proven that statistics is the universal language of science because it goes everywhere.โ
The colloquium proper showcased work from over 20 participating researchers through oral and poster presentations. The papers spanned a wide distribution of fields and applications of statistical science, including biostatistics, time series analysis, Bayesian frameworks, and machine learning, among others.
Mi-Auree Bautista, Executive Assistant to the National Statistician and Civil Registrar General of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and one of the colloquium judges, noted the increasing sophistication of student-led research, saying โThe level of analysis from way back has really progressed so much, and itโs quite nice to see young statisticians drafting and conducting studies that would be beneficial to society.โ
After a day of presentations and thorough deliberation, the afternoon session concluded with the recognition of outstanding research presentations and poster entries:

Capping off the program, participants heard a message from statistics faculty Prof. Nelia Ereno, who championed the establishment of the UP Cebu BS Statistics Program during her term as COS Dean from 2021 to 2024. She reminded the researchers that their training in statistics carries a responsibility beyond the classroom, rooted in integrity and public service, โPatuloy nating isabuhay ang dangal at husay. Padayon, mga iskolar ng estadistika para sa bayan.โ
(Let us continue to embody honor and excellence. Carry on, scholars of statistics, in the service of the nation.)
The colloquium culminated the fifth year of the UP Cebu Statistics Program, established in 2021, making UP Cebu the fourth constituent university in the UP System and one of only two universities in Cebu to offer the degree program.
First launched in 2025, the Student Research Colloquium on the Statistical Sciences serves as an annual platform not only for statistics scholars, but also for researchers from various disciplines who apply statistical science in their work.

Leading the Way in Extreme Value Research!
We extend our warmest congratulations to Asst. Prof. Jacque Bon-Isaac C. Aboy of the UP Cebu Statistics Program for being the Lead Author of a newly published article in Springerโs prestigious Natural Hazards journal!
Title: Nonstationary Generalized Extreme Value Modeling of Extreme Wind Speed Events with Seasonality and Time-Varying Variability
Published: 21 May 2026
DOI: 10.1007/s11069-026-08193-8
In this noteworthy contribution, Asst. Prof. Aboy and his co-authors propose a sophisticated nonstationary GEV model to capture extreme wind speed events, addressing seasonality and time-evolving variability, offering critical insights for the design of resilient offshore wind farms in coastal regions such as Kagoshima, Japan.
Study Highlights:
โ๏ธ Employed wavelet power spectrum and MODWT to diagnose nonstationarity across multiple temporal scales
โ๏ธ Developed a GEV model with sinusoidal covariates (location) and an exponential covariate (scale)
โ๏ธ Achieved superior goodness-of-fit and accuracy (AIC & RMSE) compared to stationary alternatives
โ๏ธ Identified southern Kagoshima, particularly Kasan, as highly vulnerable to extreme winds

Through their presentations, our seniors demonstrated how data-driven approaches can be applied to address real-world problems, generate meaningful insights, and support evidence-based decision-making.
The defense sessions highlighted the studentsโ dedication to statistical research, from data collection and methodology to analysis, interpretation, and communication of results. Their work reflects not only the knowledge and skills they have developed throughout their academic journey, but also the growing role of statistics in understanding and responding to contemporary issues.
As this milestone comes to a close, we extend our warmest congratulations to all graduating students who successfully defended their Special Problems. Your perseverance, discipline, and commitment to academic excellence have brought you to this moment, and we are proud to celebrate this achievement with you. โจ
May this accomplishment serve as another step toward your future endeavors as statisticians, researchers, and professionals.
