FIRESTART | North High’s Powerful Opening Week Sets the Tone
The first week of the instructional block for Term 1 of School Year 2026–2027, held from June 15-19, unfolded with purpose and promise at DepEd Luis Y. Ferrer Jr. North National High School (LYFJNNHS). Anchored on the belief that first impressions leave lasting marks, the school community demonstrated a unified commitment to excellence from day one. Classrooms became spaces of structure and inspiration, where both teachers and learners aligned themselves with the mission of delivering quality education and fostering disciplined, lifelong learners.
Teachers took the lead in shaping this strong beginning, entering classrooms fully equipped and ready to deliver their best. Complete with lesson plans, budget of work, attendance sheets, and masterlists, they established clear expectations and routines early on. “We set the tone in the first week – not just for lessons, but for values and discipline that will guide learners throughout the year,” shared one teacher, highlighting the intentional effort to build a culture of excellence. Principal Mr. Patricio H. Cruzada further emphasized, “Our goal is to ensure that every learner experiences quality education from the very first day, where preparedness and discipline are clearly demonstrated.”
Learners rose to the occasion, eager to prove themselves and create positive impressions. Their enthusiasm was evident in active participation and the display of their skills across different subjects. “I want to show my teachers that I can be responsible and hardworking,” shared a Grade 7 student, reflecting the excitement of new beginnings. A Grade 8 learner added, “Giving our best in the first week helps us build confidence.” For a Grade 9 student, consistency was key: “It motivates us to continue doing well beyond the first days.” Meanwhile, a Grade 10 learner expressed maturity and leadership, saying, “We aim to set a good example since we are the seniors of junior high.”
Beyond the classroom, North High strengthened its commitment to accessibility and learner welfare. The school continued to accommodate late enrollees, ensuring that no learner was left behind. At the same time, the feeding program commenced successfully, addressing students’ nutritional needs and supporting their readiness to learn. These efforts reflected the school’s holistic approach, where academic growth is complemented by care for students’ well-being.
Equally vital were the contributions of non-teaching personnel, whose dedication helped maintain a safe, clean, and functional learning environment. From acquiring essential supplies and repairing usable furniture to cleaning restrooms, the canteen, library, and laboratories, their work ensured that facilities were ready for daily use. “Our responsibility goes beyond instruction – we all help create a space where students feel safe and motivated,” another teacher shared, recognizing the collaborative effort behind the school’s smooth operations.
The week also highlighted preparedness and innovation across programs. The School Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (SDRRM) team efficiently facilitated the Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill on June 18, reinforcing safety awareness among learners and staff. Meanwhile, the Special Program in the Arts (SPA) and Science, Technology, and Engineering (STE) programs thrived with visible and proactive coaches guiding students in dance, music, creative writing, theater arts, biotechnology, environmental science, and robotics. As the week concluded with a meaningful flag retreat, smiles and shared experiences reflected a successful start – proving that at North High, a strong first impression becomes the foundation for a remarkable school year.

ALERT & READY | North High learners, teachers, parents participate in nationwide earthquake drill to strengthen disaster readiness
DepEd Luis Y. Ferrer Jr. North National High School (LYFJNNHS) actively participated in the 2nd Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) on June 18, 2026, at exactly 9:00 AM, reinforcing safety awareness and disaster preparedness among learners, teachers, and stakeholders. The drill followed standard protocols such as duck, cover, and hold, orderly evacuation, and systematic accounting of personnel, aligned with national disaster risk reduction initiatives and the DepEd Philippines’s School Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (SDRRM) policies anchored on Republic Act 10121. Prior to the drill, SDRRM Coordinator Mr. Ryan Edel S. Abueg conducted a room-to-room lecture emphasizing the proper routines before, during, and after an earthquake, including hazard awareness, immediate protective actions, and post-evacuation safety checks. “Preparedness is our strongest defense; drills like this translate knowledge into life-saving action,” emphasized North High Principal Mr. Patt Cruzada, underscoring the importance of consistent participation.
Learners across grade levels demonstrated increased awareness and readiness, sharing practical insights gained from both the lecture and the drill. A Grade 7 student said, “I learned to stay calm and protect my head immediately when the shaking starts,” while a Grade 8 learner noted, “Following proper evacuation routes helped me understand how to avoid panic.” Meanwhile, a Grade 9 participant reflected, “The drill showed me how important teamwork is during emergencies,” and a Grade 10 student added, “I feel more confident now that I know what to do before, during, and after an earthquake.” These responses highlighted the effectiveness of combining structured drills with targeted instruction in developing critical safety skills.
Parents and teachers likewise affirmed the importance of the initiative in cultivating a culture of safety within the school community. One parent remarked, “It gives us peace of mind knowing our children are trained for emergencies,” while another added, “Regular drills ensure families and schools work together in disaster readiness.” On the part of educators, one teacher shared, “Integrating safety routines into classroom discussions helps students internalize correct responses,” while another emphasized, “Preparedness should be continuous, not just practiced during scheduled drills but also taught consistently.” Their statements reinforced DepEd’s directive to institutionalize DRRM education as part of everyday learning.
The successful conduct of the NSED demonstrated strong coordination among school officials, SDRRM coordinators, and the entire school population, reflecting LYFJNNHS’s commitment to resilience and safety. The integration of Mr. Abueg’s proactive lecture further strengthened learners’ understanding of earthquake preparedness beyond simulation, ensuring readiness in real-life scenarios. While the drill proceeded as scheduled, provisions remain for adjustments in case of holidays or unforeseen emergencies, ensuring flexibility without compromising preparedness goals. As seismic risks persist nationwide, initiatives such as the NSED reaffirm the school’s proactive stance in building a disaster-ready community grounded in awareness, discipline, and shared responsibility.

A TASTE OF HOPE: ‘Sharmaine’ Orange Brightens North High Feeding Day
When a Grade 7 student saw the bright orange fruit on her plate, she couldn't help but giggle. "I told my classmate, 'Look, Sharmaine is here!'" she said, referencing the viral social media post that has turned a simple citrus fruit into an internet sensation. But beyond the laughter and the memes, something far more significant was happening at DepEd Tayo-Luis Y. Ferrer, Jr. North NHS General Trias City (LYFJNNHS) on this Monday morning, June 15: hope was being served alongside rice, embutido, and yes, the now-famous orange.
The school's feeding program, launched today at the campus canteen, targets learners who fall below the benchmark of the Body Mass Index (BMI) – students whose nutritional needs have gone unmet for far too long. Under the Department of Education's School-Based Feeding Program (SBFP), which aligns with the government's commitment to address malnutrition among school children as mandated by Republic Act No. 11037 or the Masustansyang Pagkain para sa Batang Pilipino Act, North High has taken concrete steps to ensure that no child learns on an empty stomach. The program provides at least 120 feeding days per school year, offering nutritionally adequate meals that contain "go, grow, glow" foods essential for children's development.
"This is more than just feeding hungry children," said School Principal Mr. Patricio H. Cruzada, his voice filled with conviction as he observed the first day's activities. "This is about giving our learners the fighting chance they deserve – the energy to learn, the strength to dream, and the nutrition to reach their full potential. When we invest in their health today, we invest in our nation's future."
Ms. Janet G. Asis, one of the Feeding Program Coordinators alongside Mr. Edwin P. Santos, beamed with satisfaction as she watched the children eat. "The opening day of the feeding program was positive and successful," she shared, her eyes following the orderly lines of students receiving their meals. "The learners delightedly received their meals and observed the proper feeding procedures. What touched my heart most was seeing their faces light up – not just because of the food, but because someone cared enough to prepare it for them." The complete meal of rice for energy, embutido for protein, and orange for vitamins represents the balanced nutrition these growing bodies desperately need.
A twelve-year-old beneficiary, whose small frame belies his big appetite for learning, spoke between bites of his meal. "Before, I would feel sleepy in class because my stomach was empty," he admitted shyly. "Now, I'm excited to come to school because I know there's food waiting for me. And the orange – I mean, Sharmaine – makes everything fun!" His innocent joy captures the dual impact of the program: addressing physical hunger while nurturing emotional well-being.
Parent volunteer Mrs. Abarollo, who helped serve meals alongside other dedicated parents, wiped away tears as she reflected on the day's significance. "As a mother, I know what it's like to worry about whether your child has eaten enough," she said softly. "To be part of something that helps other parents' children – it fills my heart. We sincerely thank everyone whose support and cooperation contributed to the success of this activity." As the canteen gradually emptied and satisfied students returned to their classrooms, one thing became clear: at North High, "Sharmaine" isn't just a viral joke – it's a symbol of community care, a reminder that sometimes the smallest gestures, wrapped in humor and served with love, can make the biggest difference in a child's life.
