Scientific studies suggest that Japan faces a growing risk of rare but extremely powerful megaquakes capable of generating devastating tsunamis, with Hokkaido and Okinawa identified as particularly vulnerable regions.
Researchers combined advanced seismic monitoring techniques with historical records of major earthquakes and tsunamis. Along the Chishima and Japan Trenches off Hokkaido, geological evidence indicates that massive tsunamis have occurred roughly every 340 to 380 years. In 2017, the government’s Headquarters for Earthquake Research Promotion warned of a high likelihood of a magnitude 8.8 or greater earthquake in the region, noting that around 400 years had passed since the last major event.
Recent studies have reinforced those concerns. Seismologist Kazuyoshi Nanjo of the University of Shizuoka and his team analyzed earthquake activity and identified unusually low “b-values,” which can indicate a buildup of underground stress that may eventually be released in a major quake. Similar patterns were observed off the Sanriku coast before the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.
Additional signs, including slow-slip events and reduced seismic activity, suggest that conditions off Hokkaido today resemble those seen before the 2011 disaster. While scientists cannot predict exactly when or how large a future earthquake may be, they emphasize the need for constant preparedness.
Separate research led by Fumiaki Tomita of Tohoku University used seafloor monitoring equipment near Nemuro, Hokkaido, to track crustal movement. Data collected since 2019 showed that tectonic plates in the area remain strongly locked together while continuing to accumulate strain. Researchers estimate that enough energy may already have built up to produce another megaquake comparable to past events.
Meanwhile, studies of the Ryukyu Trench near Okinawa suggest the region may experience long-term earthquake “super-cycles,” in which giant earthquakes occur after centuries of strain accumulation. By examining fossilized coral reefs that record past land uplift, scientists found evidence of repeated periods of intense seismic activity over the last 5,000 years.
Researchers believe the 1771 Great Yaeyama Tsunami, which generated waves up to 30 meters high and claimed about 12,000 lives, may have marked the beginning of the latest super-cycle. Although the Ryukyu Trench was once considered unlikely to produce very large earthquakes, new findings indicate that the region could be entering another active phase.
Scientists stress that although the timing of future events remains uncertain, both Hokkaido and Okinawa require continued vigilance and disaster preparedness due to the potential for powerful earthquakes and tsunamis.( asahi shinbun)
