Today is ! Wetlands are areas where water meets land. These include mangroves, marshes, rivers and lakes, and even coral reefs. 50 years ago, the Ramsar Convention was signed in Ramsar, Iran to conserve these ecologically significant areas around the world.
In the Philippines, there are 8 Ramsar Sites, with the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park being the biggest. Just today, the Sasmuan Pampanga Coastal Wetlands was named as the countryโs eighth Ramsar Site and Wetland of International Importance. This site is an important stopover point for migratory waterbirds and serves as a sanctuary for different species of mangrove and fish.
The Sasmuan wetlands may now be protected by name but they still face several threats. Situated in Manila Bay, the wetlands are not safe from the destructive reclamation projects that are ongoing throughout the Bay.
Wetlands are among the most productive ecosystems in the world. Storing huge amounts of carbon within their plants and soil, they play an important role in combatting the effects of the climate crisis. Help preserve and restore Philippine wetlands by signing our petition: www.savemanilabay.ph
