The Gabaldon Building of Cavite State University: A Heritage of Education and History
Located within the Cavite State University (CvSU) Main Campus in Indang, Cavite, the historic Gabaldon Building stands as one of the most enduring symbols of educational development and cultural heritage in the province. More than a school structure, it represents a significant chapter in the history of Philippine public education and serves as a tangible reminder of the institution's evolution through the decades.
The building belongs to the distinguished group of Gabaldon School Buildings constructed throughout the Philippines between 1907 and 1946 under Act No. 1801, commonly known as the Gabaldon Act. Authored by Assemblyman Isauro Gabaldon, the law provided funding for the construction of permanent public school buildings across the country. Designed primarily by American architect William E. Parsons, these structures blended elements of the traditional Filipino bahay kubo and bahay na bato with architectural features suitable for the tropical climate, including high ceilings, large windows, wide corridors, and efficient ventilation.
The CvSU Gabaldon Building was constructed during the period when the institution was known as Indang Rural High School, which was formally established in 1927 under the leadership of Principal Simeon F. Madlangsacay. This period marked an important transition in the institution's history as it expanded its educational mission beyond basic agricultural instruction to include secondary and vocational education. The institution later became Don Severino National Agriculture School in 1958 and eventually evolved into Cavite State University.
Today, the building serves as the home of the Cavite State University Laboratory Science High School. Despite the passage of time, it continues to function as an active educational facility while preserving much of its original architectural character. The structure remains in its original location and serves as a living monument to the generations of students, teachers, and administrators who contributed to the development of the university.
Recognizing its cultural and historical significance, the Gabaldon Building underwent a comprehensive restoration and rehabilitation project from September 8, 2021, to March 21, 2022, during the administration of Dr. Hernando D. Robles. The project aimed to preserve the architectural integrity and historical character of the structure while ensuring its continued functionality as an educational facility. This conservation initiative reflects the university's commitment to safeguarding its built heritage and is consistent with the provisions of Republic Act No. 11194, otherwise known as the Gabaldon School Buildings Conservation Act, which seeks to protect, preserve, and promote the remaining Gabaldon school buildings throughout the Philippines.
Beyond its architectural value, the Gabaldon Building holds social, educational, and historical significance. It serves as a repository of institutional memory and reflects the enduring commitment of the Filipino people to education. For the Cavite community, it remains an important landmark that connects the past with the present and inspires future generations to appreciate and preserve their cultural heritage.

Andres Gumiit at Nicolasa Lalongganda
Miguel de la Cruz at Cathalina Brigida
Marzelino Gonzales at Cecilia Siangita
Clemente de los Santos at Augustina
Juan de la Cruz at Maria Loreta
Eugenio de Legaspi at Maria Gamotin
Gabriel Dingco (isang Sangley) at Maria Candelaria
Andres Santoyo at Luisa Francia
Francisco de la Cruz at Geronima Nataya
