On June 10, 2026, the Department of Forest Biological Sciences (DFBS), led by Dr. Crusty E. Tinio, met with DOST-PCAARRD Balik Scientist Atty. Chad Patrick Osorio to discuss potential collaborations on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in biodiversity conservation and forestry research.
Hosted through the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension (OVCRE), the meeting provided an opportunity to exchange ideas on emerging technologies and their potential applications in biodiversity assessment, wildlife monitoring, and conservation research. Atty. Osorio shared insights from his work on AI, environmental policy, and conservation, highlighting initiatives that leverage AI and global wildlife databases to strengthen biodiversity conservation and wildlife monitoring efforts.
The meeting also highlighted interdisciplinary collaboration through the participation of Dr. Zenith Arnejo from the Institute of Computer Science, College of Arts and Sciences, UPLB. Together with Atty. Osorio, Dr. Arnejo is developing agent-based modeling (ABM) approaches to examine wildlife trade dynamics, including the monitoring of threatened and endemic Philippine wildlife species.
The discussions identified opportunities for future collaborative research integrating forestry, biodiversity science, and emerging digital technologies. Plans were likewise explored for a possible guest lecture in FBS 101 (Forest Biodiversity) focusing on the applications of AI in biodiversity conservation. The meeting also opened avenues for future international academic linkages that may support collaborative research, knowledge exchange, and capacity-building initiatives in biodiversity science and conservation.

The Department of Forest Biological Sciences celebrates the International Day for Biological Diversity by honoring the beauty and complexity of our forests, from the towering emergent trees to the rich canopy, diverse understory, verdant shrub layer, and dynamic forest floor that sustain a wide range of life forms. Each forest stratum plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological equilibrium, reminding us that we are all interconnected within a system we must protect.
With this yearโs theme, โActing locally for global impact,โ understanding the complexity of forest strata inspires meaningful action toward biodiversity conservation rooted in local efforts. Through our small steps of forest conservation campaigns, ecosystem restoration programs, and the promotion of sustainable practices within our communities, we collectively contribute to building a greener and more sustainable society. No effort is too small when our security, sustainability, and greener future are at stake.

Last May 09, 2026, the students of FBS 36 โ Fundamentals of Forest Ecology showcased the results of their hard work during the Myth Busting Scientific Conference with the theme: โEcology in Practice: Testing Beliefs, Uncovering Science.โ
Through experiments, field observations, and scientific presentations, students tested common ecological beliefs and examined whether they are true. The conference highlighted not only their scientific knowledge and critical thinking skills, but also their creativity, wit and passion for science.
