Even before the COVID-19 season, finance has been a persistent stressor for many of us. And last year, news channels often featured conflicts between strangers in the grocery over food and tissue.

We had to learn to prioritize our finance for safety and security against the airborne virus while confronting other responsibilities. The world struggled.

💡This afternoon, we will tackle the effects of financial stress on mental health.

The fight against COVID-19 still continues, and standing at the frontline protecting the lives of others and risking theirs are the frontliners. Their sacrifice to help people threatens their health in more ways than one.

Being the backbone of the fight against COVID-19, it is only right that their vulnerability to a decline in mental health be acknowledged and for their struggles to be recognized.

We want to express our deepest gratitude to our heroes, the frontliners, as well as talk about the various challenges they face that may negatively affect their mental state.

“The reality is that you will grieve forever. You will not ‘get over’ the loss of a loved one; you will learn to live with it. You will heal and you will rebuild yourself around the loss you have suffered. You will be whole again but you will never be the same. Nor should you be the same nor would you want to.”

- Elisabeth Kubler-Ross and David Kessler

Do you know someone dealing with grief? Are you dealing with loss?

For those dealing with grief, no amount of words could ever come close to fully describing how painful it is. Some days are better, some days are worse. But even on the best days, it still hurts - unbelievably.

Whether it's the loss of a loved one or grief for the life you had prior to the pandemic, the feelings of loss can be hard to deal with. The symptoms of grief are already difficult, but couple that with the limitations to coping mechanisms that the pandemic brings and how naturally isolating quarantine can be, it may become even more overwhelming.

The truth is, there is not a step-by-step guide on how to deal with grief or how to help someone dealing with loss. However, there are coping mechanisms that are much healthier than others. And whatever form of grief you may be dealing with, you have every right to heal.

"... workloads are handed over with the expectation of the students to do said tasks on their “free” time or whenever they are available. It may be an effective approach but to juggle asynchronous tasks from both majors and minors on our given time dissolves the line we tried to set up to balance our time at work, studies, families, and ourselves."

After looking at various research studies regarding the effect of the pandemic on people's mental health, let's dive in deeper and get more personal!

We interviewed 25 respondents, 14 of which were enrolled college students, 2 currently unenrolled college students, 2 SHS students, and 7 professionals. They were asked questions regarding the state of their mental health and the possible causes for how they were doing mentally, as well as either suggestions on what could improve their mental state or what could help others'

Some responses are quoted below. (The respondents quoted gave consent for their responses to be shared in this post.) We would like to give special thanks to everyone who agreed to participate.

Due to the pandemic, many schools have chosen to opt for a remote learning set-up. Earlier today, we talked about how this set-up has affected the academe.

The pandemic is already stressful enough as it is, but this abrupt transition to a new learning set-up has inevitably caused issues to the mental health of both students and teachers alike.

If you are one of the students or educators whose mental health has declined significantly because of the new set-up, remember that your struggles are valid, and your voice deserves to be heard.
