𝙏𝙐𝙉𝘼𝙔 𝙉𝘼 𝙍𝙀𝙋𝙊𝙍𝙈𝘼 𝙎𝘼 𝙇𝙐𝙋𝘼 𝙄𝙋𝘼𝙂𝙇𝘼𝘽𝘼𝙉!

Ngayong araw, ginugunita natin ang ika-38 taong pagkakatatag ng Huwad na Reporma sa lupa na kung tawagin ay Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program o CARP. Ayon sa programang ito, layon daw nitong maibalik sa masa ang labis na lupa na kinamkam ng mga panginoong maylupa. Ngunit kung ating susuriin, napakaraming probisyon ang inilagay dito upang maging pabor sa mga kongresista na sila ring mga panginoong may lupa dahil sa makasarili nitong layunin na huwag mawalan ng kita. Kitang-kita na tanging kita lang ng mga naghaharing uri ang nais tugunan ng neoliberal na polisiyang ito. Dagdag pa dito, gampanin din ng mga magsasaka na bayaran ang lupang ipagkakaloob sa kanila ng CARP. Insulto ito sa ating kababayang nagbabanat ng buto mula umaga hanggang gabi para mapaniguradong may makakain tayo sa ating hapag.

Kaakibat nito, ang CARP din ay isang walang habas na pambabastos sa mga pesante at masang pinaslang ng rehimeng Aquino noong Mendiola Massacre na ang tanging hiling lang ay maibalik na sa kanila ang lupang kinamkam ng imperyalistang pwersa ng España at Estados Unidos. Matatandaan na ang pyudalismong dulot nila ay ang pangunahing peste na sumisira sa kinabukasan ng agrikultura sa ating bansa. Ipinasa umano ang CARP para tugunan ang hinaing ng mga pesanteng nagtipon sa Mendiola. Ngunit kasing pait ng karahasang dinanas nila sa lansangan ng lungsod ang aning nadama sa kanayunan. Patuloy na binobomba ng militar ang mga komunidad sa Timog Katagalugan gaya sa Mindoro. Nariyan din ang karahasang dinulot ng 79th Infantry Batallion ng AFP sa Negros na pumaslang sa ating mga community worker, kabilang na ang ilan nating kasama sa pamantasan na sila na sina Alyssa Alano at Maureen Santuyo, mga kasamang buo ang diwa na tugunan ang mga suliraning agraryo.

Kaya kaisa ng mga pesante at ng masa, ang mga mag-aaral College of Economics and Management ay patuloy na ipapanawagan ang tunay na reporma sa lupa. Hindi nalalayo sa pang-ekonomiyang lente ang usapin ng reporma sa lupa dahil dama ng ating ekonomiya ang hirap at gutom na dinaranas natin dahil sa patuloy na import-dependent at export-oriented na uri ng ekonomiya. Sa ilalim ng ganitong sistema, kulong lang sa pagtatan ng mabentang uri ng tanim gaya ng tubo at pinya na hindi naman talaga tinutugunan ang kakulangan ng pagkain sa Pilipinas gaya ng bigas. Patuloy din ang pagkawala ng lupang sakahan dahil sa patuloy na pag-komersalisya nito alang-alang sa “pag-unlad” na hindi naman isinasama ang pesante’t masa.

Patuloy tayong mga ekonomista ng bayan na kakalampag para sa pagpasa ng Genuine Agrarian Reform Bill o GARB para sa tunay na reporma sa lupa tungo sa isang makabayan, siyentipiko, at makamasang uri ng agrikultura. Wakasan na ang pambabarat sa mga pangunahing pwersa. Halina’t tumindig para sa ating magsasaka.

LOOK: The incoming officials of the College of Economics and Management Student Council (CEM SC) officially take their oath of office today, May 28, at the Fabian A. Tiongson Conference Room of the Department of Agribusiness Management and Entrepreneurship.

Present at the oath-taking were Chairperson-elect Red Xavier Macarandang, Vice Chairperson-elect John Leo Venedict Perez, and College Representative-elect to the University Student Council Jana Oria, alongside Councilors Chris Danielle Ferrer and Jasmin Lopez.

Dr. Ma. Angeles O. Catelo, incumbent dean of the college, administered the oath, with members of the CEM Executive Board also in attendance.

Following the oath-taking, Chairperson-elect Macarandang acknowledged that in spite of the incomplete slate, the council vows to forward genuine student representation and assures that the welfare of the student body will remain their priority.

"The genuine student representation is crucial in advancing the calls of the studentry and forwarding their demands into action. Our mission is always to fight for the welfare of students, and to make sure no student gets left behind," said Macarandang.

We, the undersigned student councils, organizations, and members of the academe in Southern Tagalog, express our unified call to condemn in the highest degree, the proposed Reframed General Education (GE) Curriculum of Commission on Higher Education (CHED) which serves as another manifestation of a neoliberal policy that further deepens the colonial, commercialized, and fascist orientation of Philippine education.

As we recall, the plan of reframing the General Education Program came to reality as a response to the report and recommendations of the Second Congressional Commission on Education or EDCOM II as well as an alignment with the Senior High School Basic Education Curriculum to “avoid redundancy” of course content, which explains its railroading by the higher education commission.

The impending reduction of GE programs is an outright move to focus the tertiary education curriculum to the production of a docile workforce favorable to foreign monopoly corporations and a neocolonial bureaucracy. As it lessens space not only for humanities and social sciences but also mathematics, it deprives the students of a space for academic freedom and critical thinking necessary to examine and understand the cultural and political contexts of our country. It is also anti-scientific in that it reduces the natural and information sciences to mere development of technical skills demanded by the neoliberal order.

This is also clearly an attack on the academic freedom of both students and the professors with the attempt to kill their ability to think critically and holistically. It is clear that the state is afraid of the youth and the masses getting critical and continuously exposing the lies and the atrocities of the fascist state to the masses, hence this attempt to silence us by removing courses that fosters social awareness.

This move further threatens the job security of teachers, particularly those teaching General Education courses as their jobs are put at stake. This proposal is, therefore, a blatant violation of the rights of the teachers and professors.

The National Union of Students of the Philippines-Southern Tagalog, together with the students and teachers of the region, join the calls to oppose and junk the proposed Reframed GE Program. This only curtails the quality of an already rotten education system by serving the interests of the imperialist United States, the primary force pushing the implementation of the neoliberal agenda, as manifested in the 4-Day Compressed Work Week and 100% Online Classes. The masses are already tired of anti-people policies being implemented that do not really reflect our lived realities and provide solutions for these.

Along with the calls to junk this proposal, we must continue to advance an education system with a Nationalist, Scientific, and Mass character. Schools and universities must be at the forefront of cultivating students’ ability to think critically and analyze the current social state that we are in. Courses being taught must answer the social conditions of the masses and most importantly, education must really be accessible to the masses.
