𝗣𝗔𝗚𝗗𝗜𝗥𝗜𝗪𝗔𝗡𝗚 𝗡𝗚 𝗔𝗥𝗔𝗪 𝗡𝗚 𝗞𝗔𝗟𝗔𝗬𝗔𝗔𝗡 🕊️

𝙊𝙪𝙧 𝙋𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝘾𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝘽𝙚 𝙀𝙧𝙖𝙨𝙚𝙙
Human identity is not meant to be contained within the rigid walls of a box; like light breaking free, we are meant to be refracted into a full, vibrant spectrum. 𝗪𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲.
The strict gender binary enforced by our institutions creates 𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲, 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 for the LGBTQIA+ community. Because legal, educational, medical, and corporate systems ignore identities beyond ‘male’ and ‘female,’ q***r Filipinos face 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲.
This is especially clear in the country’s 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝘃𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. The Philippines still 𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗮 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗮𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, while the SOGIESC Equality Bill continues to be held up by conservative delays in Congress. Without this protective law, transgender and non-binary individuals cannot legally change their names and gender markers on official documents. Additionally, they encounter widespread institutional barriers, such as discriminatory grooming and uniform policies in schools and workplaces, and a routine denial of access to suitable public restrooms.
These systemic failures lead to 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀. The community endures workplace harassment, unjust termination, and a lack of medical care that is sensitive to their needs. Culturally, this binary system fosters systemic violence, making q***r and gender-nonconforming Filipinos—especially transgender individuals—𝘃𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 that are rarely prosecuted under relevant bias-motivated laws.
𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀; 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹.

Even with the craziest workload, you just push through with so much grit. Wishing you the most rewarding year ahead.

36 years ago today, the World Health Organization finally removed homosexuality from its list of diseases. Today, on 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗮, 𝗕𝗶𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗮, 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗮, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗮 (𝗜𝗗𝗔𝗛𝗢𝗕𝗜𝗧), we celebrate how far we’ve come and look closely at how far we still have to go.
This year’s global theme “𝘼𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙃𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝘿𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙘𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙮” is a reminder that a truly just society means equity and freedom for 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬𝗢𝗡𝗘.
In the Philippines, the Supreme Court made history by ruling that same-sex couples can co-own property under Article 148 of the Family Code. Meanwhile, local governments are securing the healthcare rights of the LGBTQIA+ community through “Right to Care” proxy initiatives in Quezon City and Cavite City which are now inspiring a national push for Senate Bill 1534.
But the fight for national protection of the LGBTQIA+ community is far from over.
For over 26 years, the SOGIESC Equality Bill has been left pending. This leaves many members of the LGBTQIA+ community vulnerable to discrimination in schools, workplaces, and public spaces.
Change does not just happen. It is nurtured. Whether you are a member of the LGBTQIA+ community or a fierce ally, your voice matters today more than ever. 📣🏳️🌈
