HIGIT SA USAPIN NG KASAYSAYAN, ITO AY USAPIN NG KASALUKUYAN.

Mahigit isang siglo na ang nakalipas mula nang makalaya ang Pilipinas mula sa kolonyal na paghahari ng Espanya. Taun-taon nating itinataas ang watawat at ginugunita ang sakripisyo ng mga bayaning nagbuwis ng buhay para sa bayan. Ngunit sa gitna ng mga usaping bumabalot sa bansa ngayon, nananatiling mahalagang tanungin:

Buhay nga ba ang saysay ng kalayaan kung ang demokrasyang kaakibat nito’y hindi iginagalang?

Sa mga nagdaang buwan, nasaksihan ng mamamayan ang kaganapan patungkol sa pagpapatalsik kay Bise Presidente Sara Duterte na siyang nagdulot ng kaguluhan sa pagitan ng mayorya at minorya sa senado. Ang mga pangyayaring mas nagpatambol sa usaping ito tulad na lamang ng naging sagutan nina Senador Pangilinan at Padilla, ang habulang pag-aresto kay Senador Dela Rosa, ang hindi pagdalo ng mayorya sa mga pagpupulong at maging ang nakalilitong pagpapalit-palit ng pinuno ay ilan lamang sa mga patunay ng pambabastos sa diwa ng demokrasya sa bansa. Ang sariling pamahalaang ipinaglaban noon ay nagiging katawa-tawa, tila parang sirko ang senado.

At dahil mistulang ang mga nakaupo mismo ang lumalapastangan, ang pag-asa ng demokrasya ay nasa mga mamamayang handang makialam. Ito ay pakikialam sa pamamagitan ng paggamit ng edukasyon upang gawing malay ang sarili at kapwa patungkol sa proseso ng impeachment trials at paghahalal ng pinuno sa senado, pagsali sa mga makabuluhang diskusyon at mga kilos protesta upang panagutin ang mga may sala, at higit sa lahat ay pagpaparehistro nang sagayon ay makaboto ng mga maaasahang kandidato.

Malinaw na ang demokrasya ay hindi lamang nasusukat sa pagkakaroon ng teritoryo at sariling pamahalaan, kundi sa kakayahan ng mga opisyal na manindigan, harapin at respetuhin ang hatol ng batas habang kasangga ang mapanghamon at matalinong pakikialam ng bawat mamamayang Pilipino.

Ngayong ika-128 Araw ng Kalayaan, hindi sapat na alalahanin lamang ang mga tagumpay ng nakaraan. Higit kailanman, kinakailangan nating pangalagaan ang mga kalayaang ipinaglaban para sa atin at tiyaking ang bawat isa sa atin, opisyal man o simpleng mamamayan ay ginagampanan ang ating papel sa lipunan.

Mula sa loob ng pamantasan hanggang sa mas malawak na sambayanan, kaisa ang UPLB Com Arts Society sa paggiit ng katotohanan, pananagutan, at makabuluhang pakikilahok ng mamamayan sa demokratikong proseso.

Sapagkat ang kalayaan ay hindi lamang ipinagdiriwang. Ito ay araw-araw na ipinaglalaban.

Parang bituin na patuloy ang ningning, maligayang kaarawan sa aming leading lady—Erin! 🎂🎉

We hope your days are filled with genuine happiness, good health, academic victories, and countless reasons to keep sharing that beautiful smile we all adore. and has served as the official organization for Communication Arts majors in the University of the Philippines Los Baños since 1976. The UPLB ComArtsSoc aims to cultivate the human perception towards arts and humanities and provide outlets for the artistic talents of members, focusing on the three aspects of the specialization of the Communication Arts program: Writing, Speech Communication, and Theatre Arts.
