In the final week of Rice: Research to Production (RR2P) 2026, participants explored emerging frontiers in rice science—from drones, direct-seeded rice, and low-emission landscapes to postharvest systems, drought phenotyping, greenhouse gas measurements, and the conservation of rice genetic diversity.
Beyond the lectures and field activities, the week was marked by meaningful conversations with IRRI scientists, career reflections, collaborative learning, and the presentation of projects that showcased three weeks of growth, discovery, and teamwork.

🌾 From science to field: RR2P 2026 explores the many dimensions of rice systems
Week 2 of IRRI's Rice: Research to Production (RR2P) immersed participants in key topics including nutrient management, rice diseases, grain quality, seed systems, water management, GIS, and modern breeding approaches.
A highlight of the week was the Northern Luzon Learning Journey, where participants visited Corteva Agriscience, DA-PhilRice, and DA-PHilMech to gain firsthand insights into how research, innovation, mechanization, and partnerships drive rice sector development.
The journey culminated in the world-renowned Banaue Rice Terraces, where participants engaged with local farmers and explored the rich rice culture and traditions of the Ifugao people—offering a powerful perspective on the connection between science, heritage, and sustainable food systems.

🌾 Advancing rice science worldwide: IRRI launches the 19th implementation of Rice: Research to Production (RR2P)
IRRI’s three-week flagship course, Rice: Research to Production (RR2P), officially began last week, bringing together scientists, researchers, and graduate students from Asia, Africa, North America, and Latin America for an immersive learning experience on rice production, breeding, research, and global collaboration across the rice-based agri-food sector.
In his opening message, Dr. Jerry Glover, IRRI's Chief of Staff, underscored the significance of RR2P as one of IRRI’s longstanding flagship capacity development initiatives—strengthening global partnerships and advancing IRRI’s vision of transforming rice-based systems for a better world.
From classroom sessions on rice science and breeding to hands-on field activities and visits with farming communities in Laguna, Week 1 gave participants a closer look at how research drives innovation and creates impact across the rice value chain.

To provide a more immersive and intensive learning experience, the Hands-on Training on Biotic Stress Resistance Evaluation will now be delivered as a 2-week comprehensive face-to-face course instead of the previous per-module weekly format.
