#1 Topic: "The Role of Epigenetic Modifications in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Human Cancer"
Speaker: Dr. Michael Chan
Affiliation: Department of Biomedical Sciences, National Chung Cheng University, Taiwan

Abstract:
Epigenetic modifications play critical roles in the initiation, progression, and therapeutic response of human cancers. Unlike genetic mutations, epigenetic alterations are reversible and include DNA methylation, histone modifications, and non-coding RNA expression. These mechanisms regulate gene expression and influence tumor cell proliferation, metastasis, immune evasion, and drug resistance. Recent advances have identified epigenetic biomarkers with significant potential for early cancer detection, prognostic prediction, and personalized treatment strategies. In particular, aberrant methylation patterns and dysregulated epigenetic regulators have emerged as promising diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets for cancer immunotherapy in several human malignancies. In this talk, I will present recent findings from my laboratory on the application of epigenetic modifications in the diagnosis and treatment of human cancers, highlighting their translational and clinical potential in precision oncology.

#2 Topic: Geoelectric Field Applications in Earth Sciences: From Subsurface Imaging to Seismo‑Electromagnetic Monitoring
Speaker: Dr. Hong-Jia Chen
Affiliation: Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, National Chung Cheng University, Taiwan

Abstract:
Geoelectric observations offer a sensitive and versatile approach for investigating physical processes within the Earth’s subsurface. This presentation provides a concise overview of how natural electric potential (self‑potential, SP) measurements and geoelectrical techniques are applied across key areas of Earth sciences. In subsurface exploration, geoelectric surveys are widely used to map groundwater flow, identify fluid pathways, characterize hydrothermal and environmental systems, and delineate geological structures relevant to engineering and resource studies. Their ability to detect electrokinetic and redox‑related signals enables non‑invasive imaging of dynamic subsurface processes. The talk also highlights the growing role of geoelectric observations in seismo‑electromagnetic research. Variations in the geoelectric field may reflect stress changes, fluid redistribution, or microfracturing processes associated with seismic activity. By integrating geoelectric monitoring with seismic catalog analysis and statistical seismology, researchers can evaluate whether electrical anomalies provide complementary insights into fault behavior and seismic potential. Advances in instrumentation and data analytics continue to improve the reliability of these measurements. Overall, geoelectric methods bridge geophysics, environmental monitoring, and earthquake science, offering valuable opportunities for students and researchers interested in both field‑based and computational approaches to understanding Earth processes.

One of the highlights of the 40th Philippine Chemistry Congress and the 17th EurAsia Conference on Chemical Sciences (EuAsC₂S-17) was the recognition of Dr. Jose Isagani B. Janairo as the recipient of the 2026 PFCS Achievement Award for Chemical Research.

What makes this recognition even more special for the DLSU community is that Dr. Janairo is a proud alumnus of the Department of Chemistry. He completed his BS Biochemistry (cum laude) and MS Chemistry degrees at De La Salle University before pursuing his PhD in Chemical Science at Hokkaido University, Japan, as a Japanese Government Scholar.

From being a student in our classrooms and laboratories to becoming a nationally recognized scientist, educator, and researcher, Dr. Janairo's journey is a reminder of how passion, curiosity, and perseverance can create lasting impact in science.

Congratulations, Dr. Janairo! Your achievements continue to inspire students, alumni, and fellow scientists, and bring pride to the DLSU Department of Chemistry and the entire scientific community.
