| We, the student institutions of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), being true to our mandate to serve the best interests of our direct constituencyโthe studentsโand in consideration with the other members of our Community, call on the University for a system-wide academic ease starting 26 October to 03 November 2024.
In the past few days, the majority of Luzon was hit by Typhoon Kristine, with some placesโwith PUP campuses, especially in the Southโseverely affected. This typhoon is not normal, as it left 81 dead, 34 missing, and 66 injured, as reported by the Office of Civil Defense. Furthermore, its rainfall set a new high record in the Country with 528.5 millimeters of rain in Daet, Camarines Norte alone, beating typhoons Yolanda and Ondoyโs.
As the student councils and other University officials continue to receive reports about students, faculty members, and employees and their families who need urgent help, as well as with the fact that some campuses were flooded, it is known to us that we, as an academic institution, were affected by this natural calamity. In consideration of these, the University announced an asynchronous mode of classes for the 26th and 27th.
Furthermore, after โs onslaught, another tropical storm, named โKong-reyโ or โLeon,โ will enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). As forecasted by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) as of the morning of 26 October 2024, it will not directly affect the Country but will make South Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao rain through southwesterly wind and the trough of Typhoon Kristine.
As we fast approach the observation of Undas 2024, the Government has already suspended classes and works on the noon of 31 October 2024, aligning it with the holidays on All Saintsโ Day and All Soulsโ Day, leaving us with only Saturday available for classes in all levels.
We are requesting this in relation to the mentioned reasons. We believe that implementing an academic ease will be of great help to us all as we collectively help each other recuperate from the unprecedented catastrophes and continue the Filipino tradition of remembering our lost loved ones. We expect that the Administrationโs response to this will be favorable, as we stand firm to Its principle of being โmakatao at makabayan.โ
