NEWSTALGIA Highlights Nostalgia in Marketing
By: Aleeyah F. Pangandaman
PUP Manila PROJECT ZENITH Production held “NEWSTALGIA: When Memories Meet Marketing,” exploring how emotional connection and familiarity influence brand communication and audience response at the PUP Bulwagang Balagtas last June 9.
Featured in the event were two competitions: the pre-event “MEMOREEL: Past, Replayed. Brand, Reframed.” and the trivia segment “Game KNB-a?”
Ctrl + Z was declared champion in MEMOREEL, with PRIMERO UNO finishing first runner-up and UMBRAL as second runner-up.
In Game KNB-a?, RESPLENDENT emerged as champion, followed by UNFOLDED as first runner-up and DOSPIRACION as second runner-up.
Keynote speaker Rezza Mhay Maaño, RPm, CHRA, tackled the journey of nostalgia as rooted in both cherished and difficult experiences and associated with one’s identity, noting that people respond more to emotional familiarity than to information.
“Your brain isn’t just simply remembering that information, it is simply connecting the identity of yourself,” Maaño said.
Nostalgia marketing was then discussed by Raeselle Joyce Angeles, who emphasized that this type of strategy evokes strong positive emotions because of the memories associated with the product, strengthening brand recognition.
“People don’t remember the features; they remember the feelings, the memories, and the emotions that come with it,” Angeles noted.
Guest performances from Harry Ocampo, Xerenade, and Aikee brought energy and entertainment to the audiences, taking a trip down memory lane through nostalgic songs.
Project Chairman Marcius Alec Dollentas closed the event by emphasizing the role of memories and emotions in building connections between brands and consumers, ultimately fostering lasting customer loyalty.
