Peace With Creation: A Forum on Climate Justice in the Philippines
Register through: https://tinyurl.com/USTeSeasonOfCreation

The Season of Creation, observed annually from September 1 to October 4, invites us to renew our commitment to ecological justice and the care of our common home.

This year’s theme — “Peace with Creation” — is inspired by the words of the prophet Isaiah “The effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever. My people will abide in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.” (Isaiah 32:17–18).

Isaiah reminds us that peace is inseparable from justice, and that creation itself suffers when human greed and violence prevail.

The Season of Creation 2025 symbol, the Garden of Peace, is represented by a dove carrying an olive branch. It recalls the story of Noah, when the dove’s return signaled not only the end of the flood but also the beginning of renewal. Today, this symbol calls us to ecological conversion — of heart, lifestyle, and action — so that peace may once again take root when humanity reconciles with both Creator and Creation.

Yet amid this universal call, we face urgent ecological realities in our own context. The Sierra Madre, the Cordilleras, and Mindanao — lifelines of biodiversity, culture, and community — are under grave threat from large-scale mining, dam construction such as the Kaliwa Dam, and corruption-driven flood control projects that fail both people and ecosystems.

Too often framed as “development,” these ventures displace Indigenous Peoples, destroy forests and rivers, and disregard the dignity of both human and animal life. These realities compel us to ask: Para kanino ang kaunlaran? and Kaninong kapayapaan ang nasasakripisyo?

This forum will amplify the voices of Indigenous leaders and advocates whose lives and lands are directly affected. Their testimonies remind us that true peace is not the mere absence of conflict, but the presence of justice and dignity.

As Thomasians, Dominicans, and fellow youth, we are called to raise a prophetic voice — to speak truth in the face of destruction, to denounce injustice, and to proclaim hope for creation.

Inspired by Laudato Si’, which urges us to hear both the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor, we are summoned not only to reflect but also to act. May this gathering empower the Thomasian and Dominican community to live out this prophetic mission:
to become peacemakers, cultivators of justice, and faithful witnesses to God’s vision of harmony — working for a world where justice flows, peace prevails, and all of creation thrives.

PEACE WITH CREATION is part of the global ecumenical observance of the Season of Creation (September 1–October 4, Feast of St. Francis of Assisi), extended in the Philippines until October 13 (Indigenous Peoples Sunday). It also coincides with World Rivers Day (fourth Sunday of September), Save Sierra Madre Day (September 26), and the *University’s celebration of the Francisco de Vitoria Linggo ng Karapatang Pantao.

Selected UST NSTP CWTS/LTS students who will be joining this event have been informed by their facilitators last three weeks. But Everyone is welcome to participate in this meaningful gathering!

Diamonds and gold may sound like treasures on Earth, but in the universe they are surprisingly common. Stars create carbon and heavy metals, and supernova explosions scatter them across galaxies. Planets, asteroids, and even entire star systems can be rich in these elements. Wood, on the other hand, is far rarer because it requires life, trees, and a living planet like Earth. Unlike diamonds and gold that form naturally in extreme cosmic events, wood is tied to biology, making a single wooden branch in space more unique than mountains of gold or fields of diamonds.
