The term *Bagat Dagat* means "to meet and celebrate," reflecting a long-standing tradition of gathering along the shore for fellowship, recreation, and community spirit.

‎Eighteen years ago today, on June 21, 2008, the MV Princess of the Stars departed Manila bound for Cebu. Caught in the fury of Typhoon Frank, the vessel capsized off Sibuyan Island, resulting in one of the deadliest maritime disasters in Philippine history.
‎
‎What many may not know is that the tragedy eventually reached the shores of Masbate.
‎
‎In the days that followed, powerful ocean currents carried survivors and the remains of victims across the sea. Bodies began washing ashore on Burias Island, particularly in the towns of San Pascual and Claveria. Local accounts also recall that some remains were found along other parts of Masbate's coastline, including areas of Aroroy, as the sea continued to bring heartbreaking reminders of the disaster.

‎For many Masbateños, the memory remains vivid. Fishermen encountered victims at sea, while coastal communities witnessed the painful aftermath unfold along their shores. Some unidentified victims were temporarily buried in local cemeteries until authorities could establish their identities and reunite them with their families.
‎
‎The tragedy left a deep emotional impact on coastal communities. In the months that followed, some residents became hesitant to eat fish, squid, and other seafood, fearing that marine creatures may have fed on the victims' remains. Though there was no scientific basis for such beliefs, they reflected the grief, shock, and sorrow experienced by those who witnessed the disaster's aftermath firsthand.

‎Today, we remember not only the lives lost aboard the MV Princess of the Stars, but also the compassion shown by the people of Masbate who helped rescue survivors, recover victims, and provide dignity to those who never made it home.
‎
‎A tragic chapter in Philippine maritime history—and a forgotten chapter in the history of Masbate.
‎
