The UP Geological Society warmly congratulates 𝐃𝐫. 𝐉𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐆𝐚𝐛𝐨-𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨 for being a 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓 𝐀𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐞 of the 𝐃𝐎𝐒𝐓 - 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 (𝐍𝐑𝐂𝐏). The award was given at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City on March 13, 2026.

The NRCP awards honor members who advance scientific knowledge and contribute to national progress through research excellence.

STATEMENT

Noong Abril 19, walang habas na pinaulanan ng bala ng 79th Infantry Batallion ng Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) ang Barangay Salamanca, Toboso, Negros Occidental kung saan halos 168 na pamilya at 653 na mga indibidwal ang napilitang magbakwit sa kanilang mga tahanan.

Kaugnay nito, ibinabalita ng UP Diliman University Student Council na isa sa mga nasawi ang ating kapwa Iskolar ng Bayan na si USC Councilor Alyssa Alano dahil sa pasistang atake at panunupil ng militar sa Negros.

Mariing kinukundena ng UP Diliman USC ang ginawang pagpatay ng AFP kay Alyssa na isang inosenteng sibilyan.

Lubos ding tinututulan ng UP Diliman USC ang karumaldumal at paulit-ulit na paglabag ng reaksyunaryong gobyerno at ng kanilang mga mersenaryo sa karapatang pantao ng mamamayan ng Negros at maging sa mga aktibistang sumasandig sa laban ng masang api.

Sa kasalukuyan, si Councilor Alano ang Education and Research Councilor ng USC UP Diliman.

Nakipamuhay at nakipag-aralan si Alyssa sa hanay ng mga kapatid nating magsasaka mula sa Negros upang alamin ang kanilang tunay na kalagayan sa harap ng pangangamkam sa lupa, pagsasamantala, at militarisasyon.

Nananatili ang Negros bilang isa sa mga rehiyong may pinakamatinding militarisasyon at paglabag ng karapatang pantao. Pinaigting ng Memorandum Order 32, na naglagay sa Negros sa “State of Lawless Violence”, ang pagtaas ng presensya at operasyong militar sa rehiyon.

Walang habas ang mga mersenaryo sa pangangamkam ng lupa at pananamantala. Tumitindi ang pandarahas, pandadakip, at pagpatay ng mga magsasakang Negrense.

Nakita at naintindihan ni Councilor Alano ang kahalagahan sa paggamit ng kaniyang talino at lakas upang ipaglaban ang mga karapatan ng mga estudyante at batayang sektor, lalo sa pagtindi ng krisis sa ekonomiya.

Si Alyssa ay naging isang mahusay, masikhay, mapagmahal, at dakilang lider-estudyante at tunay na anak ng bayan.

Nagluluksa ang konseho at buong komunidad ng UP sa pagkawala ni Alyssa. Mahigpit ding nakikiramay ang konseho sa kanyang mga naiwang pamilya, kaibigan, at mahal sa buhay.

Buong tapang at buong pusong tinanggap ni Alyssa ang hamon sa bawat Iskolar ng Bayan–ang paglingkuran ang sambayanan. Hinding-hindi natin siya malilimutan.

Nalulungkot ang buong konseho sa pangyayari, ngunit higit dito, pinipili ng UP Diliman USC na buong tapang at buong tatag na ipagpatuloy ang laban para sa hustisyang panlipunan at katarungan para sa lahat ng biktima ng pasismo ng kasalukuyang nabubulok na estado.

Hangga’t hindi nabibigyan ng solusyon ang ugat ng kahirapan, marami pa ang katulad ni Alyssa na handang pag-aralan ang lipunan at magiging handang ipaglaban ang isang lipunang malaya sa pagsasamantala. Hinding-hindi mapuputol ang diwa ni Alano sa malawak na hanay ng mga Iskolar ng Bayan na pahihigpitin pa lalo ang pagkakaisa para tuluyang magapi ang isang sistema ng lipunang mapang-api at mapagsamantala.

Iskolar ng Bayan, ipagpatuloy natin ang militanteng diwa ni Alyssa Alano!

Tumindig tayo, kasama ang bawat Iskolar ng Bayan, komunidad ng UP, at mamamayang Pilipino para sa tunay na kalayaan, katarungan, at hustisyang panlipunan!

Sumandig tayo sa laban ng mga magsasaka at lahat ng masang-api! Palakasin natin ang boses at pwersang yayanig sa sistemang mapang-api!

After a deep dive, students emerged with newfound knowledge and memorable moments at 𝗟𝗜𝗥𝗜𝗣: 𝗔 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 (𝗛𝗦𝗪) last March 13, 2026, on the first day of the 2026 National Geology Congress. 🌄

The HSW is an event at the height of learning, where inquisitive young minds from all over the nation can come together and explore the geosciences under the tutelage of esteemed guest geologists. Students were exposed to fundamental topics of Earth science and taught concrete ways of how to use these concepts in both real-life and technical scenarios, such as with the workshops for Philippine Geohazards and Basic Rock and Mineral Identification. 🪨

UP GeoSoc would sincerely like to thank our partners and, of course, our participating students for making this event possible. We hope that the workshop allowed the opportunity for everyone to learn more about the world we live in. 🌏

⛺Last March 13, 2026, 𝗕𝗔𝗡𝗔𝗔𝗚: 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀' 𝗦𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿 had shed light to the wonders, potential, and dangers of our earth during the 2026 National Geology Congress conducted by the UP Geological Society.

The ESTS seeks to provide 𝐢𝐧-𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐡 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 in pursuit of advocating for awareness of the Earth’s wonders and processes that ultimately impact our communities, all together with proper science communication. Distinguished Filipino specialists from different fields shared valuable insights on essential topics related to Earth Science education. Teachers were also exposed to the features of both our land and water, through the NIGS museum tour and the MSI Collections tour 🧡💙.

We would like to extend our gratitude to all participating teachers for taking the time to support the awareness and promotion of the geosciences. We hope everyone gained valuable insights and knowledge from the event. It may be the end of our trip, but the dawn of the new day will still come for us to uncover knowledge in the geosciences. 🌅

🏔️ Summit Reached, Badges Earned ⛺

This year’s edition of the 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗤𝘂𝗶𝘇: 𝗔𝗻 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 officially wrapped up last March 14, 2026 after gathering bright young minds from across the country at the National Institute of Geological Science in UP Diliman, where they put their knowledge and teamwork to the ultimate test in a fitting finale to the 2026 National Geology Congress. 🌄

All rangers showed strong performance and determination throughout the competition, but three teams ultimately leapt ahead of the pack.

🏕️ Philippine Science High School - Bicol Region Campus in Camarines Sur (Team A) blazed the trail to victory, emerging as the Champions of the 2026 Geoquiz!

🧭 Philippine Science High School - Bicol Region Campus in Camarines Sur (Team B ) followed closely behind in second-place, proving their knowledge every step of the way

🗺️ Las Piñas National High School (Team A) rounded out the podium in third-place, after putting up an outstanding performance.

Each team’s journey to the summit was no easy trek, but they pressed on with enthusiasm and firm determination. Hats off to the winners! 🌲

Lastly, UP GeoSoc salutes all of the teams, coaches, venue-managers, and organizers who made this year’s expedition possible, turning NIGS into a true basecamp of learning and competition.

🌏 Happy World Geologists Day! 🪨

Traversing from the rugged mountains ⛰️ to the depths of our seas 🌊, geologists have always been the pioneers uncovering the complex history of the Earth. As we face the challenges of rising oil prices and global energy demands today, we recognize the experts working tirelessly to secure our future. Geologists serve as the backbone of the energy sector, researching and locating vital resources to stabilize supply while innovating for the global energy transition ⚡.

Here in the Philippines, our geologists brave rugged tropical terrains and unpredictable weather to safeguard our nation's progress. By leading the exploration and management of our geothermal reservoirs and searching for local oil and gas deposits, they are at the forefront of achieving energy self-sufficiency. Their dedication in assessing geohazards and securing indigenous energy sources ensures that, even amidst a complex global landscape, we have the resilience to keep the Filipino spirit moving forward.

To the earth enthusiasts 🌐, certified geoscientists 👷, and students 🧑‍🎓 still climbing boulders to join the ranks—thank you for your incredible passion and dedication. May you continue to pursue the answers to the mysteries of the lands, the seas, and the cosmos 🚀.

As Women's Month nears its close, our efforts in championing women's stories in the field of geology are definitely here to stay.

Our featured alumnus is the indomitable Ms. Cielo Bastero, GeoSoc alumnus and now geoscientist-superintendent and Lecturer 2 at the UP National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS), teaching Petroleum Resources. Having attained her BS Geology degree in 2003, the field of exploration, whether it be mining or oil, was a dominantly male space but this did not deter her from breaking boundaries and pursuing a decorated career in the field of petroleum geology. She discovered this path under the tutelage of her instructors in a Petroleum Geology elective class and was inspired by the adage “Oil is first found in the minds of men,” convincing her that science is not necessarily restricting but expanded through imagination.

She shares in detail with us the opportunities being an officer in GeoSoc gave her, acquiring communication and leadership skills. And now, as a professional, her time in GeoSoc remains a foundation, where the “Meat Market” and the short time of serving in the NIGS canteen first taught her to overcome trepidation and build the confidence to face any industry challenge.

There have been no truer words than what our featured alumni has imparted to us for Women's Month.

Ms. Ma. Coleen Loise Navarro's foray into the petroleum industry is a testament to the stepping stones the organization and the institute have laid out for her that molded her into the professional she is now. However, it is important to note that she never had all the answers in the beginning. She recounts with us her uncertainty in choosing her path and how her instructors piqued her interest in petroleum geology. Equipped with this new-found interest, she continues to challenge gender biases and expectations, carving out a space in the industry to call her own.

Her success in her endeavors is credit to her perseverance along with the right support system and mentors who recognize her skills and contributions.
