UP Math Club is a student-led non-stock, non-profit organization dedicated in promoting Mathematics

The UP Mathematics Club was founded on 14 February 1921 at the Manila campus of the University of the Philippines, at a time when mathematics was still an underdeveloped subject in the country. For over 102 years, the UP Mathematics Club has consistently contributed to the promotion and development of mathematics in the Philippines.

Democracies are built by the power of the people, but what can we do to maintain it? How can we ensure that outcomes truly represent the collective preferences of society?

Mathematics has some interesting applications in testing systems for fairness and representation and the mathematical study of elections is a field of its own.

Today’s Math Monday looks into the famous Arrow’s Impossibility Theorem and its surprising insights on dictators and ranked voting systems.

While truth tables are a convenient way to show that two statements are logically equivalent, working with them tends to be tedious and, for some, more computational than elegant. In this post, we prove two well-known logical equivalences using only their basic definitions, without any recourse to truth tables.

Political dynasties are more than just an issue, these are something we can actually measure!

From graph theory to network analysis and many more branches of mathematics, these helps us understand how power stays within families, how they always win, and how they influence our daily lives.

In the Philippines, where many positions are held by members of the same families, we can quantify this and reveal patterns we often do not see. Who holds power? How often do they win? And what can we do about it?

Given a matrix, one can build an equation special to that matrix known as its characteristic equation. One interesting fact is that plugging a matrix itself into its own characteristic equation satisfies it!
