When you say "get off the counter" and your child stays there, the problem isn't that they didn't hear you. It's that the first instruction has never actually mattered. Most parents say it once. Then again. Then louder. "Get down." "Please get down." And while the parent keeps talking, the child stays on the counter. Because the child learned the first instruction isn't real. The real one comes later, with volume. Say it once: "Get off the counter." Clear, calm, direct. If they don't move, you move. Lift them down. The words happen once. The action happens once. The child needs to experience that the first instruction is the only instruction. No explaining, no negotiating, no finishing the errand. Leaving today costs you one grocery run. Staying and negotiating costs you every one after it. Once outside, one sentence: "We left because you hit the floor." Then silence. No repeating, no negotiating, no second chance to go back in. The rules don't change because you're in a store.
