Project Aytalakad Ing Lahi, through the initiative of Mr. Vish Juvaddi, a Peace Corps volunteer, and its Culturally Relevant Guidance and Counseling component headed by Mr. Daniel Dizon, successfully concluded a five-day Self-Help Plus (SH+) training program on stress management, basic health care, and mental health for the Aeta Mag-Anchi community on May 28, 2026, at Sitio Manabayukan, Capas, Tarlac.
Self-Help Plus is an initiative and stepped-care program of World Health Organization (WHO) that addresses the growing need for accessible and scalable stress-management solutions, particularly in low-resource and crisis-affected settings. Initiated by Mr. Juvaddi and adopted by the Culturally Relevant Guidance and Counseling component, the program equipped student volunteers and faculty extension workers from the Department of Psychology and Human Services with the necessary knowledge and skills through various trainings prior to their deployment in the community.
The fifth session of the Self-Help Plus Program spearheaded by Dr. Francelle L. Calub and Mr. Daniel T. Dizon focused on the concept of โMaking Room,โ aimed at providing knowledge and understanding to community members about the importance of managing stress and maintaining emotional well-being amidst life's challenges.
Mr. Daniel T. Dizon, component head of Culturally Relevant Guidance and Counseling, opened the session with a recap of previous sessions conducted by the student-volunteers, emphasizing their essence and importance in the lives of community members.
Meanwhile, Dr. Francelle Calub shared the importance of the program implemented in the community and expressed her hope that the learnings and practices introduced throughout the sessions will be sustained by the community members even after the program has concluded.
During the discussion, Mr. Dizon revisited the four key techniques previously introduced by the student volunteers from the Psychology and Human Services Department to participants: grounding, unhooking, values, and kindness. He reminded the participants that these methods can help them manage difficult situations and heavy emotions.
Explaining the first technique, grounding, Mr. Dizon shared, โWhen we stop our problems, we should know what we're really thinking, what we're feeling.โ He emphasized the importance of recognizing one's thoughts, feelings, and surroundings, including practicing proper breathing techniques to stay present and calm.
The discussion then revisited unhooking, which encourages individuals not to allow problems to consume them. According to Mr. Dizon, โWe have the ability to choose not to bring the problem closer to us if it really won't help us.โ He explained that while problems may remain present, people can learn to detach themselves from unhelpful thoughts and reactions.
The third and fourth techniques highlighted the importance of values and kindness toward oneself and others. Mr. Dizon reminded participants that despite mistakes and hardships, everyone possesses goodness. He stated, โIf we have a problem, let's not forget to be good to ourselves because who is our first companion when we have a problem? It's ourselves.โ He further emphasized the value of community support, noting that people should also extend kindness to others because they play an important role in helping one another during difficult times.
The final technique, โMaking Room,โ served as the central focus of the final session. Mr. Dizon explained that individuals must create enough space within themselves to process challenges and emotions. He illustrated this concept using the metaphor of the sky and changing weather. โWe are all the sky and the weather is our problem,โ he explained. โSometimes, it's dark. Sometimes, it's sunny. Sometimes, it's rainy. But notice that no matter what time it is, the sky is always wide and it always has space.โ
Following the discussion on the final session, an opportunity was given to the participants, allowing community members to share common concerns affecting their families and the community. Participants identified food insecurity, limited income, and transportation difficulties as some of the most pressing issues they regularly face.
Acknowledging these realities, Mr. Dizon reminded participants that while problems may not immediately disappear, the strategies learned throughout the five sessions can help ease emotional burdens and strengthen resilience.
As the session concluded, Mr. Dizon and Dr. Calub encouraged participants to apply and share the lessons learned within their households and throughout the community. Mr. Dizon also assured them that the project team remains available to provide guidance and support, particularly for concerns related to mental and emotional well-being. The successful completion of the Self-Help Plus Program marks another significant milestone in Project Aytalakad Ing Lahi's commitment to promoting holistic community development and strengthening the mental health and well-being of the Aeta Mag-Anchi community.
