Project Aytalakad Ing Lahi, through the initiative of Mr. Vish Juvaddi, a Peace Corps volunteer, and its Culturally Relevant Guidance and Counseling component headed by Mr. Daniel Dizon, successfully concluded a five-day Self-Help Plus (SH+) training program on stress management, basic health care, and mental health for the Aeta Mag-Anchi community on May 28, 2026, at Sitio Manabayukan, Capas, Tarlac.

Self-Help Plus is an initiative and stepped-care program of World Health Organization (WHO) that addresses the growing need for accessible and scalable stress-management solutions, particularly in low-resource and crisis-affected settings. Initiated by Mr. Juvaddi and adopted by the Culturally Relevant Guidance and Counseling component, the program equipped student volunteers and faculty extension workers from the Department of Psychology and Human Services with the necessary knowledge and skills through various trainings prior to their deployment in the community.

The fifth session of the Self-Help Plus Program spearheaded by Dr. Francelle L. Calub and Mr. Daniel T. Dizon focused on the concept of โ€œMaking Room,โ€ aimed at providing knowledge and understanding to community members about the importance of managing stress and maintaining emotional well-being amidst life's challenges.

Mr. Daniel T. Dizon, component head of Culturally Relevant Guidance and Counseling, opened the session with a recap of previous sessions conducted by the student-volunteers, emphasizing their essence and importance in the lives of community members.

Meanwhile, Dr. Francelle Calub shared the importance of the program implemented in the community and expressed her hope that the learnings and practices introduced throughout the sessions will be sustained by the community members even after the program has concluded.

During the discussion, Mr. Dizon revisited the four key techniques previously introduced by the student volunteers from the Psychology and Human Services Department to participants: grounding, unhooking, values, and kindness. He reminded the participants that these methods can help them manage difficult situations and heavy emotions.

Explaining the first technique, grounding, Mr. Dizon shared, โ€œWhen we stop our problems, we should know what we're really thinking, what we're feeling.โ€ He emphasized the importance of recognizing one's thoughts, feelings, and surroundings, including practicing proper breathing techniques to stay present and calm.

The discussion then revisited unhooking, which encourages individuals not to allow problems to consume them. According to Mr. Dizon, โ€œWe have the ability to choose not to bring the problem closer to us if it really won't help us.โ€ He explained that while problems may remain present, people can learn to detach themselves from unhelpful thoughts and reactions.

The third and fourth techniques highlighted the importance of values and kindness toward oneself and others. Mr. Dizon reminded participants that despite mistakes and hardships, everyone possesses goodness. He stated, โ€œIf we have a problem, let's not forget to be good to ourselves because who is our first companion when we have a problem? It's ourselves.โ€ He further emphasized the value of community support, noting that people should also extend kindness to others because they play an important role in helping one another during difficult times.

The final technique, โ€œMaking Room,โ€ served as the central focus of the final session. Mr. Dizon explained that individuals must create enough space within themselves to process challenges and emotions. He illustrated this concept using the metaphor of the sky and changing weather. โ€œWe are all the sky and the weather is our problem,โ€ he explained. โ€œSometimes, it's dark. Sometimes, it's sunny. Sometimes, it's rainy. But notice that no matter what time it is, the sky is always wide and it always has space.โ€

Following the discussion on the final session, an opportunity was given to the participants, allowing community members to share common concerns affecting their families and the community. Participants identified food insecurity, limited income, and transportation difficulties as some of the most pressing issues they regularly face.

Acknowledging these realities, Mr. Dizon reminded participants that while problems may not immediately disappear, the strategies learned throughout the five sessions can help ease emotional burdens and strengthen resilience.

As the session concluded, Mr. Dizon and Dr. Calub encouraged participants to apply and share the lessons learned within their households and throughout the community. Mr. Dizon also assured them that the project team remains available to provide guidance and support, particularly for concerns related to mental and emotional well-being. The successful completion of the Self-Help Plus Program marks another significant milestone in Project Aytalakad Ing Lahi's commitment to promoting holistic community development and strengthening the mental health and well-being of the Aeta Mag-Anchi community.

Project Aytalakad Ing Lahi conducted Medical Mission 2026 on May 28 at Sitio Manabayukan, Capas, Tarlac, as part of its continuing efforts to address basic health concerns within the community. The initiative provided free medical and dental services, consultations, and health assessments to help address common health concerns affecting residents and promote overall well-being.

Sitio Manabayukan is a geographically isolated community in Capas, Tarlac, where access to healthcare services remains limited due to transportation and resource constraints. Through the medical mission, residents were able to access healthcare services closer to their community, prioritizing their health through consultations and assessments conducted by volunteer doctors, nurses, dentists, and healthcare professionals.

This initiative of Project Aytalakad Ing Lahi, headed by Dr. Francelle Calub, aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages by addressing major health priorities.

Medical Mission 2026 was led by doctors, nurses, dentists, and healthcare volunteers from the Tarlac State University Medical Services Unit, headed by Dr. Rommel Hernandez, Tarlac State University Dental Services Unit, headed by Dr. Jose Mario Hipolito, Capas Rural Health Unit II, and the Tarlac Medical Society.

A total of 176 community people benefitted during the medical mission, which include mothers, elders, youth, and children.

Nurse Cherryl M. Abila of the TSU Medical Services Unit shared that their first experience conducting a medical mission in the community exposed the team to various challenges while strengthening their commitment to public service. โ€œSince it was our first time in the community, the team gained a deeper understanding of various health and social concerns, including maternal and child health, nutrition, and health literacy,โ€ she said.

Despite these challenges, the medical mission greatly helped the TSU Medical Team enhance their clinical experience, teamwork, communication skills, and understanding of underserved communities, strengthening their commitment to compassionate public service.

Further, the medical team identified areas that may benefit from continued intervention through health education and guidance. Among the key concerns observed were the need to strengthen awareness and practices on personal hygiene, proper handwashing, toothbrushing, and family planning methods to help improve the communityโ€™s overall health and well-being.

Meanwhile, the TSU Dental Services Unit conducted a dental mission aimed at improving oral health and promoting proper dental hygiene, particularly among children. The team provided fluoride treatment to strengthen tooth enamel, prevent cavities, and address early signs of tooth decay.

However, Dr. Hipolito noted that limited access to clean water in the community remains a challenge in achieving good oral health. โ€œServing in this remote community has given us the determination to continue our goal of building strong and healthy young individuals,โ€ he said.

Dr. Christina Sahagun of the Tarlac Medical Society emphasized the importance of collective action in supporting community health programs, said, โ€œHindi kailangang malaki ang ambag para makagawa ng pagbabago. Let us be part of something that heals. Support community health programs, even in our own little ways. Every act of kindness can bring hope to a family and better health to a community.โ€

Ms. Gloria William, a community leader from the Ayta Mag-antsi community, expressed her gratitude on behalf of the community for the initiative of Project Aytalakad Ing Lahi. โ€

In addition, Dr. Francelle Calub, Project Head, emphasized that the mission became meaningful not only because of the services provided, but also because of the peopleโ€™s willingness to serve despite the challenges. โ€œWhat made this medical mission meaningful was seeing people go beyond their comfort zones to serve others despite the distance, heat, long travel, and challenges on the ground. For us, it was never just about providing medical and dental services for a day, but about working alongside communities like Sitio Manabayukan and responding to their needs through meaningful partnerships and services. More than the number of people served, what stayed with us was the spirit of volunteerism, collaboration, and shared commitment to the community.โ€

The medical mission forms part of Project Aytalakad Ing Lahiโ€™s continuing community development efforts in Sitio Manabayukan, which include language and culture revitalization, education, psychosocial support, volunteerism, and other community-based initiatives.

Medical Mission 2026 was made possible through the collaboration of the TSU Non-Academic Staff Association (TSUNASA) headed by Engr. Maricar Banting, and TSU Alumni Associationโ€“CASS, in partnership with the Tarlac Provincial Government and the Municipality of Capas, reflecting a shared commitment to promoting accessible healthcare services and community well-being.

Health is a fundamental human right and a key indicator of sustainable development. Poor health threatens the rights of children to education, limits economic opportunities for men and women and increases poverty within communities and countries around the world.

As part of ongoing efforts of Project Aytalakad Ing Lahi to extend support and aid to the community and due to the remote location of Sitio Manabayukan, and the lack of reliable public transportation, not everyone are able to go in the mainland to check on their health especially the children and elders that led in isolating themselves.

Through this extension activity, we extend our helping hand and expertise of our volunteer doctors and nurses in the implementation of our Aytalakad Ing Lahi: Medical Mission 2026 happening tomorrow, May 28, 2026. One of the Sustainable Development Goals addressed is the SDG 3 Good Health and Well-being, aiming to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for everyone at all ages by tackling major health priorities.
