How a conflict thousands of miles away ends up in a Filipino farmerโs fuel tank is a story of a Global Domino Effect. Itโs the perfect example of how Macroeconomics becomes Microeconomics.
Most of the worldโs oil comes from a few specific regions. When conflict or instability hits those areas, the literal flow of oil is threatened. This is a Negative Supply Shock. Because the world still needs to move despite there being less oil available, the world price of Brent Crude spikes instantly. But this global price spike is only half the story; the second half depends on how we pay for it.
We don't buy oil with Philippine Pesos; we buy it with US Dollars. This is known as Forex Transmission. During global unrest, investors often rush to the US Dollar because itโs a safe haven. This makes the Dollar stronger and our Peso weaker. Even if oil prices stayed flat, we would still pay more because our Peso has lost its buying power. This expensive, dollar-priced oil then travels across the ocean and lands directly in our local economy.
By the time that oil reaches our local stations, the cost has been inflated twice: once by the global shortage and once by the currency exchange. In reality, a farmer in San Andres or a fisherman in Panganiban cannot simply stop using fuel. Their tractors, irrigation pumps, and boats are the heart of their livelihood. Because they have no choice but to buy, they absorb the high cost. This eventually leads to Cost-Push Inflation, where the price of the vegetables, rice, and fish they produce goes up for everyone else at the market.
Economics proves that we are all connected. A conflict in a distant land travels through currency markets and supply chains, eventually landing right in the fuel tank of a local producer.
| If the government provides a fuel subsidy, does that fix the Negative Supply Shock, or does it simply delay the Cost-Push Inflation?

If youโve seen the long lines at the gasoline stations today, youโre looking at a live demonstration of the principles we discussed in our ECON1, ECON2 and AGRI16 classes.
Why are people lining up for hours before the price hike on Tuesday? Letโs break down the "Why" using two core concepts:
๐๐ป๐๐ ๐บ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐ซ๐๐๐๐๐
(๐ฌ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐)
In class, we learned that demand isn't determined solely by current prices. One of the primary Non-Price Determinants is the Expectation of Future Prices.
The Reality: Because news outlets have confirmed a massive price increase this Tuesday (driven by global shortages and conflict), consumers are shifting their demand curve to the right today.
The Result: Everyone wants to "lock in" the lower price while they still can.
Why are the lines this long? Itโs because gasoline is a highly Inelastic Good.
The Reality: For most of usโand especially for our farmers and logistics providersโthere are no immediate substitutes for fuel.
The Result: Even when we know the price is about to skyrocket, we cannot simply stop buying it. We need it to transport crops, run machinery, and commute to work. Because the Quantity Demanded doesn't drop significantly when the price rises, we see these massive queues as everyone tries to beat the clock.
Fuel is a primary input. This rush and the subsequent price hike trigger Cost-Push Inflation. As the cost of transporting goods rises, the vegetables, rice, and meat in our value chain will inevitably become more expensive at the market.
In your opinion, which part of the agricultural value chain will be hit hardest by this Inelastic Demand for fuel?
