First-year BS Agriculture students enrolled in SOILSCI2, together with third-year BS Agriculture majors in Crop Science, carried out a hands-on soil fertility analysis using the Soil Test Kits (STK) from the Regional Soils Laboratory of the Department of Agriculture (RFU V).
The activity provided students with practical competencies in determining soil fertility status, enabling them to recommend appropriate nutrient management strategies for sustainable crop productivity. For the third-year students, the results generated will also serve as baseline data for their undergraduate theses.
The Soil Test Kit (STK) offers a rapid and cost-effective method for assessing key soil parameters, including pH, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), through observable color reactions following reagent application.

First-year BS Agriculture students conducted a hands-on soil sampling activity on March 26, 2026, at the College of Agriculture and Fisheries Crop Production Laboratory Farm in Calatagan, Tibang, Virac, Catanduanes.
As part of their lesson in Soil Fertility Evaluation, the students were trained to identify and delineate soil units based on topography, vegetation, and soil type. They also demonstrated proper techniques in collecting topsoil and subsoil samples, along with accurate air-drying and quartering methods to obtain a representative 1-kilogram composite sample.
This activity highlights the importance of soil sampling as a crucial first step in soil fertility analysisโwhether using soil test kits or laboratory methodsโequipping students with essential skills for sustainable and science-based agricultural practices.

The 3rd floor of the CAF building is now being developed into an urban garden with an edible landscape. Planted in the area are crops like tomatoes, eggplant, sitaw, pechay, okra, lettuce, kalabasa, ampalaya, and upland kangkongโshowing that even small spaces can help produce food.
This initiative is led by our OJT student interns as part of their project-based training to complete their remaining hours. Using their experience from Fazendas, they are putting their knowledge into practice while contributing to a greener campus.
More than just a garden, this project supports the green initiatives of CATSU and PASO Catanduanes, promoting sustainable cropping practicesโespecially important in todayโs time as global challenges continue to affect food supply.
Soon, the space will also serve as learning laboratory for students.
