The acid attack on Dr Mahnoor Nasir, a postgraduate doctor at Civil Hospital Quetta, has once again exposed the persistent gendered violence faced by women in Pakistan. Reports indicate that she was attacked while performing her professional duties and suffered severe burn injuries, leading to her transfer to Karachi for specialized treatment. The incident sparked nationwide condemnation and renewed calls for stronger protection of women in workplaces and public institutions. Acid attacks are not merely acts of physical violence but manifestations of power, control, and the desire to punish women who exercise autonomy in education, employment, and public life. Although Pakistan has strengthened its legal framework against acid violence over the past decade, such incidents continue to reveal deep rooted patriarchal attitudes that seek to restrict women’s agency. The attack on Dr Mahnoor is therefore not only a crime against an individual doctor but also a reminder of the structural barriers and insecurities that many Pakistani women continue to face despite their growing participation in professional fields.
