The Thwaites Glacier (Antarctica's “Doomsday Glacier”) is a Florida-sized ice mass acting like a cork, holding back the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. New data highlights three critical signs of an accelerating collapse:

Doubling Fractures: Satellite data reveals that structural cracking across its Eastern Ice Shelf has doubled over the last two decades, rapidly weakening its physical integrity.

Warm Ocean Undercutting: Deep, warm ocean currents are actively pushing beneath the glacier, lifting it with the tides and melting its base from below. This forces its "grounding line"—where it sits on the bedrock—to retreat rapidly inland.

Glacial Earthquakes: Seismologists have detected a surge in low-frequency seismic activity caused by massive icebergs fracturing, calving off, and colliding back into the main glacier.

Why It Matters
If Thwaites completely collapses, it will directly raise global sea levels by roughly 65 centimeters (2+ feet). Worse, losing this "cork" would allow the surrounding ice sheets to slide into the ocean, triggering a catastrophic global sea-level rise of several meters that would submerge low-lying coastal mega-cities worldwide. It is currently dumping up to 80 billion tonnes of ice into the ocean annually.
