Three Phase Separator Explained: How Oil, Water & Gas Are Separated in Oil & Gas Industry!
Definition:
A Three Phase Separator is a pressure vessel used in oil & gas production to simultaneously separate the incoming well stream into three phases gas, oil, and water using gravity, baffles, and control systems.
Ever wondered how crude oil, water and gas are separated at a production facility? This is the Three Phase Separator one of the most critical vessels in any oil & gas plant. It splits the well stream into 3 clean phases simultaneously. Every field engineer and process operator must understand this! Save this and share with your team.
1. Inlet Diverter / Baffle
Breaks incoming well stream flow and reduces turbulence for initial separation.
2. Demister / Mist Extractor
Removes liquid droplets carried in the gas phase before gas exits the vessel.
3. Weir
Controls oil level and separates the oil compartment from the water compartment.
4. Coalescing Plates
Helps small water droplets combine and settle to the bottom faster.
5. Gravity Settling Section
Main separation zone where gas, oil and water separate naturally by density difference.
6. Level Control Valve — LC (Oil)
Automatically maintains oil level and controls oil outlet flow.
7. Level Control Valve — LC (Water)
Automatically maintains water level and controls water outlet flow.
8. Pressure Control Valve — PC
Maintains vessel operating pressure by regulating gas outlet flow.
9. Gas Outlet
Exits clean dry gas to downstream compression or processing.
10. Oil Outlet
Exits separated crude oil for further treatment or export.
11. Water Outlet
Exits produced water for disposal or further water treatment.
