Heart attack and cardiac arrest are often confused, but they are very different emergencies. A heart attack is a plumbing problem, a blocked artery starving the heart muscle. The person is usually awake and breathing. Call 995 and keep them calm. Cardiac arrest is an electrical problem, the heart stops pumping. The person is unconscious and not breathing normally. Start CPR immediately and use an AED. Remember: heart attack can lead to cardiac arrest. Don't delay calling for help.
Do you know the difference now?
Be ready for both emergencies. Enrol in our comprehensive first aid course.

The heart is a muscular marvel, beating about 100,000 times a day without rest. Understanding its basic anatomy helps you appreciate why chest compressions target the center of the chest, right over the heart. In cardiac arrest, your hands become its temporary pump. Every compression pushes blood toward the brain and vital organs. That's why proper hand placement and depth are non-negotiable.
Do you know where the heart is located? Feel for your own sternum.

Ischemic heart disease doesn't announce itself loudly. It develops silently, narrowing the arteries that feed your heart. It is the third most common cause of death in Singapore, affecting thousands of families each year. The good news? Many risk factors are within your control. Know your numbers: blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar. A healthy lifestyle is the best medicine. And if an emergency does happen, knowing CPR and AED use can save a life.

Sometimes the heart is still beating, but breathing has stopped. π« This can happen in overdoses, near-drownings, or severe respiratory conditions. Standalone rescue breathing delivers vital oxygen without the need for chest compressions. The rates vary by ageβslower for adults, faster for children and infants. It's a specialised skill that every trained responder should know.
Precise timing makes all the difference.

Why learn first aid? Because emergencies don't wait for professionals. π The first few minutes are the most critical, and that's when bystanders like you have the power to act. From stopping bleeding to starting CPR, simple skills create life-saving outcomes. Most cardiac arrests happen at home, meaning your training protects the people you love most. Confidence doesn't come from nowhereβit comes from quality, hands-on training. At STC, we give you the knowledge and the practice to replace fear with action. You are never powerless. Learn the skills. Be the help.

Not all airway blockages come from food or objects. The tongue itself is the most common intrinsic obstruction in an unconscious person. That's why the Head-Tilt, Chin-Lift is so importantβit physically lifts the tongue away from the throat. Understanding intrinsic vs. extrinsic causes helps rescuers choose the right intervention. Sometimes the blockage is not something you can see; it's something you must mechanically correct.
Always open the airway first.
