Heart attack and cardiac arrest are often confused, but they are very different emergencies. A heart attack is a plumbing problem, a blocked artery starving the heart muscle. The person is usually awake and breathing. Call 995 and keep them calm. Cardiac arrest is an electrical problem, the heart stops pumping. The person is unconscious and not breathing normally. Start CPR immediately and use an AED. Remember: heart attack can lead to cardiac arrest. Don't delay calling for help.

Sometimes the heart is still beating, but breathing has stopped. 🫀 This can happen in overdoses, near-drownings, or severe respiratory conditions. Not all airway blockages come from food or objects. The tongue itself is the most common intrinsic obstruction in an unconscious person.
