⚽ With World Cup fever in the air, we are reminded of the power of football to bring people together across generations, communities and borders.
For National University of Singapore alumnus Jared Gallagher (Arts & Social Sciences ’25), that same love for the game grew from childhood kickabouts into representing Singapore on the international stage. Along the way, he balanced his studies at NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, national duties and the pursuit of a professional football career — learning that resilience is built not only through victories, but also through setbacks.
As a new generation of fans creates memories this tournament season, Jared's story is a timely reminder that dreams are rarely straightforward, but discipline, perspective and the support of those around us can carry us further than we imagine.

🌊 The ocean sustains all life on Earth, yet it is increasingly under pressure from human activity.
As the third World Ocean Assessment (WOA3) is released, we are proud to see the NUS community contributing to this important global effort led by the United Nations.
Our National University of Singapore, Faculty of Science alumni, Assoc Prof Huang Danwei (Science +USP '06, MSc '09) and Dr Karenne Tun (Science '94, PhD '13), were among the experts involved in preparing the report. Their work is helping to deepen our understanding of the world's oceans and inform decisions that shape a more sustainable future.

Building technology that creates real impact will always matter more than building tech just for the hype. 💡✨
Assoc Prof Suranga Nanayakkara (Engineering ’05, PhD ’10) is literally turning ideas into inclusive inventions — from AI headsets to fingertip readers that help people navigate the world more easily.
But what’s even cooler? He is really open about failing, learning, and trying again. 😭
His work is proof that innovation isn’t about getting it right the first time — it’s about building, breaking, and building better. 💭 Read about his journey here: https://nus.edu/4x1ULnm

Does running a business and being in a relationship equate to couple goals or chaos? 👀💸💙
Desiree Chang (Arts & Social Sciences ’25) and Matthew Tan (Year 3, Arts & Social Sciences) did both — turning a shared love for thrifting into Woofie’s, from pop-ups to a full-on store.
Between NS, school, work and late-night “what are we doing tomorrow” chats, they figured out how to build something together without losing each other along the way. 🫶
