This important study examined the extent of livelihood diversification and the factors influencing diversification among rural households in the Maroodijeex Region of Somaliland. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research combined household surveys, key informant interviews, focus group discussions, and field observations to investigate how rural communities respond to recurrent droughts, climate vulnerability, and economic uncertainty.

The findings revealed that off-farm and non-farm activities contributed 63% of total household income, while on-farm activities accounted for 37%. The study further demonstrated that access to productive assets such as irrigation, land, and livestock significantly influences livelihood diversification, highlighting its role as an important risk-management strategy for vulnerable households in drought-prone environments.

📊 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀:
• Off-farm and non-farm activities contributed 63% of total household income, compared to 37% from on-farm activities.
• Wage labor provided the largest share of household income (34.8%), followed by livestock production (27.7%).
• The mean Simpson Diversification Index (SDI) was 0.275, with 39.3% of households remaining specialized.
• Livelihood diversification was positively associated with irrigation access, landholding size, livestock ownership, and age of the household head.
• Credit access, extension services, and market distance were not statistically significant determinants.
• The study identified livelihood diversification as a key strategy for managing drought-related risks and economic uncertainty.

The Faculty of Economics and Islamic Banking at the University of Hargeisa hosted a guest lecture titled “The Role of Commercial Banks in Economic Development in Somaliland,” delivered by Mr. Khalif Sheikh Omar, Chairman of the Somaliland Banking Association. The session brought together faculty leadership, academic staff, and students, offering valuable industry insights on how commercial banks contribute to economic growth, investment, financial inclusion, entrepreneurship, job creation, and sustainable development. The lecture strengthened dialogue between academia and the banking sector and reflected the University of Hargeisa’s commitment to practical learning, industry engagement, and preparing students to connect classroom knowledge with real-world economic practice.

Junior students from the Department of Social Work at the University of Hargeisa conducted an educational field visit to Gabiley Female Prison as part of their Correctional Social Work course. Led by Mr. Mukhtar Mohamed Abby, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, and course lecturer Mr. Khadar Mohamed Ahmed, the visit provided students with firsthand exposure to correctional administration, rehabilitation programs, psychosocial support services, and offender reintegration practices. Through direct engagement with prison officials and structured observation activities, students strengthened their professional knowledge and practical understanding of correctional social work, reinforcing the University of Hargeisa’s commitment to experiential learning and the preparation of competent social work professionals for Somaliland’s social welfare and justice sectors.

The University of Hargeisa participated in the Validation Workshop for the Tourism and Hospitality Management Policy organized by the Ministry of Trade and Tourism of the Republic of Somaliland. Representing the University, Mr. Ahmed Yuusuf Goolcade, Public Relations Manager, Dr. Fekadu Y. Maru, Dean of the College of Business, Economics and Statistics, and Mrs. Jamila Abdi Elmi, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration, actively contributed to discussions and provided valuable feedback to strengthen the quality, relevance, and implementation framework of the proposed policy. The workshop served as an important platform for dialogue on tourism and hospitality education, workforce development, and sustainable tourism practices, while promoting collaboration among government institutions, higher education institutions, and the private sector. The University of Hargeisa welcomed a delegation from UNICEF Somaliland for a strategic engagement focused on strengthening collaboration in research, innovation, capacity development, and sustainable water resource management. The meeting highlighted the University’s academic and research strengths, community engagement initiatives, and its growing role as a leading center for higher education and innovation in Somaliland. Discussions also focused on the proposed Groundwater Exploration, Mapping and Test Drilling (GEM) Project, a joint initiative aimed at improving groundwater exploration, hydrogeological data systems, local technical capacity, and sustainable water resource planning. Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to advancing evidence-based research, innovation, and partnerships that contribute to water security, climate resilience, and sustainable development across Somaliland.
