ELLEN HARMON’S FAMILY CAST OUT OF THE SYNAGOGE:

“Our family were all interested in the doctrine of the Lord’s soon coming. My father had long been considered one of the pillars of the Methodist church where he lived, and the whole family had been active members; but we made no secret of our new belief, although we did not urge it upon others on inappropriate occasions, or manifest any unfriendliness toward our church. However, the Methodist minister made us a special visit and took the occasion to inform us that our faith and Methodism could not agree. He did not inquire our reasons for believing as we did, nor make any reference to the Bible in order to convince us of our error; but he stated that we had adopted a new and strange belief that the Methodist Church could not accept. 1T 40.3.

My father replied that he must be mistaken in calling this a new and strange doctrine, that Christ Himself, in His teachings to His disciples, had preached His second advent. He had said: “In My Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” When He was taken up to heaven before their eyes and a cloud received Him out of their sight, as His faithful followers stood gazing after their vanishing Lord, “behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen Him go into heaven.” 1T 41.1.

“And,” said my father, warming with his subject, “the inspired Paul wrote a letter to encourage his brethren in Thessalonica, saying: ‘And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of His power; when He shall come to be glorified in His saints, and to be admired in all them that believe ... in that day.’ ‘For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the Archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.’ 1T 41.2.

“This is high authority for our faith. Jesus and His apostles dwell upon the event of the second advent with joy and triumph; and the holy angels proclaim that Christ, who ascended to heaven, shall come again. This is our offense, believing the word of Jesus and His disciples. This is a very old doctrine, and bears no taint of heresy.” 1T 42.1.

The minister did not attempt to refer to a single text that would prove us in error, but excused himself on the plea of a want of time. He advised us to quietly withdraw from the church and avoid the publicity of a trial. We were aware that others of our brethren were meeting with similar treatment for a like cause, and we did not wish it understood that we were ashamed to acknowledge our faith, or were unable to sustain it by Scripture; so my parents insisted that they should be acquainted with the reasons for this request. 1T 42.

The only answer to this was an evasive declaration that we had walked contrary to the rules of the church, and the best course would be to voluntarily withdraw from it to save a trial. We answered that we preferred a regular trial, and demanded to know what sin was charged to us, as we were conscious of no wrong in looking for and loving the appearing of the Saviour. 1T 42.3.

Not long after, we were notified to be present at a meeting to be held in the vestry of the church. There were but few present. The influence of my father and his family was such that our opposers had no desire to present our case before a larger number of the congregation. The single charge preferred was that we had walked contrary to their rules. Upon our asking what rules we had violated, it was stated, after a little hesitation, that we had attended other meetings, and had neglected to meet regularly with our class. We stated that a portion of the family had been in the country for some time past, that none who remained in the city had been absent from class meeting more than a few weeks, and they were morally compelled to remain away because the testimonies they bore met with such marked disapprobation. We also reminded them that certain persons who had not attended class meeting for a year were yet held in good standing.1T 42.4.

It was asked if we would confess that we had departed from their rules, and if we would also agree to conform to them in the future. We answered that we dared not yield our faith or deny the sacred truth of God; that we could not forego the hope of the soon coming of our Redeemer; that after the manner which they called heresy we must continue to worship the Lord. My father in his defense received the blessing of God, and we all left the vestry with free spirits, happy in the consciousness of right and the approving smile of Jesus. 1T 43.1.

The next Sunday, at the commencement of the love feast, the presiding elder read off our names, seven in number, as discontinued from the church. He stated that we were not expelled on account of any wrong or immoral conduct, that we were of unblemished character and enviable reputation, but we had been guilty of walking contrary to the rules of the Methodist Church. He also declared that a door was now open, and all who were guilty of a similar breach of the rules would be dealt with in like manner.” 1T 43.2

The Great Inspired Quotes Exalting the Father and His Son Jesus Christ

The writings of Ellen G. White contain many statements that exalt Jehovah, the Father, as the only true God, and Jesus Christ as His only begotten Son. Consider these inspired declarations:

• “Jehovah, our Father, and His Son Jesus Christ are alone to be exalted.” (Ms 11, 1898)

• “The Father and the Son alone are to be exalted.” (Present Truth, April 26, 1900)

• “God is the Father of Christ; Christ is the Son of God.” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 8, p. 268)

• “Jehovah is the only true God, and He is to be reverenced and worshiped.” (Testimonies for the Church, Vol. 6, p. 166)

• “He was the Son of the only true God.” (Ms 182, 1898)

• “Who is Christ?—He is the only begotten Son of the living God.” (Youth's Instructor, June 28, 1894)

• “From eternity there was a complete unity between the Father and the Son.” (Youth's Instructor, December 16, 1897)

• “The Eternal Father, the unchangeable One, gave His only begotten Son.” (Review and Herald, July 9, 1895)

• “There is one God, and one Mediator between God and man, who is Jesus Christ the Son of the Infinite God.” (1888 Materials, p. 886)

Ellen White also repeatedly taught that God is a real, personal Being:

• “God is a Being, and man was made in His image.” (Ms 117, 1898)

• “God is a Spirit; yet He is a personal Being.” (Education, p. 131)

• “There is a personal God, the Father; there is a personal Christ, the Son.” (July 3, 1898)

• “Christ and the apostles taught clearly the truth of the existence of a personal God.” (Testimonies, Vol. 8, p. 265)

As believers, let us study the Scriptures diligently and examine all teachings in the light of God's Word.

How Long Has Christ Existed?

We can safely say that Christ existed before the creation of the angels. Ellen White wrote:

«"Jesus, God's dear Son, had the pre-eminence over all the angelic host. He was one with the Father before the angels were created." (1SP 17.1)»

This statement places Christ's existence before any created angelic being. However, we should never conclude that Christ is not truly the Son of God. The same passage repeatedly calls Him "God's dear Son."

The Bible presents Christ as the heavenly Firstborn:

«"The dedication of the first-born had its origin in the earliest times. God had promised to give the First-born of heaven to save the sinner." (DA 51.1)»

The earthly system of firstborn sons pointed forward to Christ, the Firstborn of heaven.

Some believe that because Christ is divine, He must be without origin. However, Scripture teaches that the Father gave life to the Son:

«"For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself." (John 5:26)»

Notice that the Father did not give the Son merely physical life. The Father possesses self-existent divine life and gave the Son to have that same life in Himself.

Ellen White wrote:

«"In Him was life, original, unborrowed, underived." (ST, April 8, 1897)»

The life possessed by Christ is self-existent life. Yet John 5:26 explains that the Father granted the Son to have life in Himself. Therefore, the Son possesses the same divine quality of life as the Father.

Christ is not divine because He is a created being. Nor is He divine merely because of a title. He is divine because He is the begotten Son of God, sharing the very nature of His Father.

As Hebrews declares:

«"Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person..." (Hebrews 1:3)»

And Ellen White wrote:

«"The brightness of the Father's glory came to a world all seared and marred with the curse." (Lt 36a, 1890)»

Thus, Christ is the exact image of the Father and the divine Son of God.

How long has Christ existed?

The Bible and Ellen White do not give a date or point in time that can be measured by human minds. What we can say with certainty is that Christ existed before the angels were created, before the worlds were made, and before anything that was created came into existence.

At the same time, Scripture consistently presents Him as God's beloved Son, sharing the Father's divine nature and possessing life in Himself.

DID CHRIST HAVE A BEGINING OF TIME?

ANSWER: YES HE WAS GIVEN BIRTH BY HIS FATHER.

‭Proverbs 8:24-26 NIV‬
[24] When there were no watery depths, I was given birth, when there were no springs overflowing with water; [25] before the mountains were settled in place, before the hills, I was given birth, [26] before he made the world or its fields or any of the dust of the earth.

Did Christ Have a Beginning?

Many Christians believe that Christ had no beginning and has existed eternally in exactly the same way as the Father. However, there are Bible passages and historical Adventist writings that have led others to a different conclusion.

The Bible Describes Christ as the Son of God

The Scriptures repeatedly present Jesus as the Son of God, not merely in title, but as the Father's only begotten Son.

«"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son..." (John 3:16)»

«"Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature." (Colossians 1:15)»

«"The Lord possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old... I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning..." (Proverbs 8:22-23)»

Those who understand Proverbs 8 as referring to Christ believe it points to a beginning so far back in eternity that finite minds cannot comprehend it.

Christ Existed Before Creation

The Bible clearly teaches that Christ existed before all created things.

«"For by him were all things created..." (Colossians 1:16)»

«"In the beginning was the Word..." (John 1:1)»

Christ was not a created being. He was the divine Son of God through whom the Father created all things.

Ellen White on Christ's Sonship

Ellen White repeatedly referred to Christ as the "only begotten Son of God."

«"Christ was the only begotten Son of God."»

«"Christ was the Son of God, existing with Him before the angels were created."»

She also wrote:

«"His personality did not begin with His incarnation in the flesh."»

This shows that Christ existed as God's Son before coming to earth.

The Father and the Son

Jesus Himself said:

«"My Father is greater than I." (John 14:28)»

Many early Adventist pioneers understood this to mean that the Father is the supreme source of all things and that Christ received His life and authority from the Father.

The Holy Spirit

The Bible frequently identifies the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of God and the Spirit of Christ.

«"Now the Lord is that Spirit." (2 Corinthians 3:17)»

«"Because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts." (Galatians 4:6)»

Many early Adventist believers therefore taught that the Holy Spirit is the Spirit and presence of God and Christ working in believers.

A Matter of Study

Not all Christians agree on these conclusions. Many understand the biblical evidence differently and believe Christ is eternally without beginning. Therefore, every believer should carefully study the Scriptures and seek God's guidance.

What is clear is that Jesus is the divine Son of God, the Savior of the world, and the only mediator between God and humanity.

«"For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus." (1 Timothy 2:5)»

May we follow the counsel of Scripture:

«"Prove all things; hold fast that which is good." (1 Thessalonians 5:21)»
