In a recent session highlighting America's 250th anniversary, English Club participants explored American music icons. 🎶🎸

English Language Fellow Amanda Cady led participants on a journey through many iconic genres including blues, jazz, hip hop, country, Latin, pop, and rock. We explored the features, key instruments and music style, and historical impact of each genre and listened to iconic songs that exemplified the music style.

Next, participants took part in a scavenger hunt to read biographies of impactful American musicians and identify key facts. Participants presented their findings to the group, highlighting facts about artists like Louis Armstrong, Michael Jackson, Kendrick Lamar, Nirvana, Selena, and more!

This activity was an engaging way for participants to explore the wide range of music across modern American history and identify the impact that American artists have had worldwide. Participants expanded their vocabulary, practiced reading, writing, speaking, and listening in English, and added to their cultural understanding of American icons.

We will continue to explore music through the month of April! Join us for upcoming sessions to learn more about some of your favorite artists and songs! 🎤🎵

Participants had the opportunity to practice typing throughout March during English Club sessions and at the American Corner computer lab, and contestants in the competition were ready to show their skills!

In the competition, contestants practiced typing quickly and accurately through three rounds of tasks. Students typed passages in English and French, and contests in the final round typed blindfolded! Throughout each round, the audience encouraged participants through cheers and applause. In the end, the top three contestants were awarded medals, certificates, and tokens to honor their hard work and show appreciation for their participation. At American Corner, students improve not only their English skills, but also their technology skills! This week, our programs are focusing on typing skills. Typing is an important skill that can help students in acing the TOEFL exam as well as in accessing excellent employment and education opportunities.

Thus week, participants practiced typing in several engaging ways. Participants practiced spelling by jumping to keys on a giant keyboard mat. Next, they worked in teams to answer English trivia questions by typing the answers. Finally, students had the opportunity to use typing practice apps on the American Corner computers. We will continue to practice typing as we lead up to our first ever American Corner Typing Competition on March 27!
