📝 Abstract
There is a growing interest in aligning nature conservation and public health agendas, yet evidence linking conservation measures to health outcomes remains limited. This seminar presents a national-scale evaluation of how decentralized forest governance affects public health through socioeconomic pathways.

Using spatial data from more than 22,000 Community Forest User Groups and longitudinal health data from over 21,000 households in Nepal (2006–2022), a causal modeling framework was applied. The study shows that Community Forestry is linked with lower socioeconomic deprivation, particularly in the poorest regions of Nepal. Lower deprivation was, in turn, associated with better mental health and child nutritional outcomes, revealing potential policy co-benefits between decentralized conservation and public health.

👨‍🏫 About the Speaker
🗣 Dr. Thomas Pienkowski
He is a Research Fellow at the Durrell Institute for Conservation and Ecology, University of Kent. He completed his PhD at Oxford University in 2022 on the links between nature conservation and mental health. He then worked at Imperial College London, studying how and why some conservation initiatives "go to scale" and what implications this has for people and nature. He continues these two research strands in his current role.

We are proud to announce that two of our recently graduated students from the Department of Social Science and Development, Faculty of Social Sciences, Chiang Mai University — Julia Win and Nyan Htet Aung — who completed their degrees in Social Science and Sustainable Development (International Program) SSSD Program — have had their final year project papers accepted for presentation at the 2026 International Interdisciplinary Conference on Myanmar's Borderlands (IICMB), to be held online on July 10–12, 2026.

📘 Enacting pro-environmental behavior through grounded engagement: An interdisciplinary case study of plastic bag use in a Lao fresh market

This interdisciplinary study explores how grounded community engagement, behavioral science, creative communication, and participatory approaches can support meaningful reductions in single-use plastic bag use in Lao fresh markets.

✨ Research highlights include:
• Community-centered and participatory behavior change
• Women vendors as key environmental actors
• Creative communication for sustainability engagement
• Practical alternatives for reducing plastic dependency

The project demonstrates how culturally grounded and locally driven approaches can foster sustainable pro-environmental behavior in Southeast Asian communities.
