This publication serves as the final conclusion to the TAAHM Project, which culminated in two simultaneous exhibitions last October: Fungi in Your Headlights by Arnont Nongyao at Panic Room in Chiang Mai, and Penumbra by the NooN Collective at Kents Cavern in Torquay, UK.

AMS faculty member Pamela Corey is one of the three international scholars leading the program's workshops.

“Material Touch Points: The Embodied Knowledge of Objects” (Application window: 17 Jun to 31 Jul 2026; program to take place 18-20 Dec. 2026)

"Material Touch Points" focuses on a persistent tension in modern and contemporary art narratives in Thailand and the region over the past three decades: the division between object-focused formal analysis and socially grounded contextual readings. How did the division between object-focused approaches and socially grounded readings become entrenched? And how might transnational perspectives combine with close readings of contemporary artworks to unsettle this divide?

The intensive three-day program is designed to immerse select participants in a rigorous schedule of artwork analysis, roundtable discussion, and presentations. During the program, participants will undertake concentrated study and writing on an artwork in the collection. Proceedings will be published following the symposium. It is a unique opportunity to learn various curatorial methodologies from leading scholars and selected participants, allowing very intensive mentorship and learning opportunities. This program is targeted toward art historians, curators, and art scholars at an early stage in their career, working independently or within institutions.

Hosted by Dib Bangkok, Material Touch Points is led by Kevin Chua (Associate Professor, 18th and 19th-century European and Southeast Asian Art History, Texas Tech University), Pamela Corey (Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Fulbright University Vietnam), and Kenji Chanon Praepipatmongkol (Assistant Professor of Contemporary Art, McGill University). Applications are now open to selecting six researchers and practitioners from the region. This workshop directs critical art from historical and curatorial perspectives toward the intersection of materiality and concept, facilitating grounded case study with the aim of connecting contemporary artworks with global artistic and intellectual currents. By tracing the “material touch points” between contemporary objects and global art histories, the symposium creates a platform for generative exchange across the multiple modernisms and productive tensions embedded.

โครงการนี้เกิดขึ้นเพื่อตอบรับกับกระแสการเติบโตของคนรุ่นใหม่ในไทยที่มุ่งมั่นถ่ายทอดประเด็นสังคม แต่ยังขาดโครงสร้างและพื้นที่บ่มเพาะทักษะอย่างเป็นรูปธรรม โดยศาสตร์แห่ง "Direct Cinema" หรือภาพยนตร์สัจนิยม เป็นแนวทางการทำสารคดีที่เน้นการฝังตัว เฝ้าสังเกตการณ์อย่างลึกซึ้ง และมีปฏิสัมพันธ์กับความจริงโดยปราศจากการจัดฉาก ซึ่งถือเป็นหัวใจสำคัญของการสร้างสรรค์ภาพยนตร์ระดับสากลที่มีสไตล์และจริยธรรมภาพยนตร์เฉพาะตัว

หลักสูตรนี้ได้รับการออกแบบตามแนวทางของสถาบัน Ateliers Varan ประเทศฝรั่งเศส ซึ่งมีประสบการณ์การฝึกอบรมยาวนานกว่า 45 ปี และเคยผลักดันผู้กำกับสารคดีรุ่นใหม่ในหลายประเทศสู่เทศกาลชั้นนำ โดยผู้เรียนจะได้รับการดูแลอย่างใกล้ชิดจากทีมผู้เชี่ยวชาญระดับโลก นำโดย Daniele Incalcaterra (วิทยากรหลักด้านการกำกับ), Emmanuelle Baude และ Anne Baudry (วิทยากรหลักด้านการลำดับภาพและบทภาพยนตร์)
