🌊 Beni-Marine Timor-Leste Supports Research for the Development of Sustainable Marine Tourism in Atauro
📅 On 11–12 June 2026, Beni-Marine Timor-Leste, together with its partners, facilitated and supported a research activity led by HACOSTA NGO, with the objective of contributing to the strengthening of the Blue Economy and the development of sustainable marine tourism in Timor-Leste.
This activity focused on the identification, analysis, and mapping of marine tourism and ecotourism routes through direct observation and data collection on marine tourism potential, coastal ecosystems, and marine biodiversity that hold significant value for conservation and sustainable tourism development.
The research was conducted in the Atauro Administrative Authority, aiming to strengthen cooperation between HACOSTA and Beni-Marine through logistical and transportation support for coastal research activities. The study also sought to identify and map potential marine tourism routes in Timor-Leste with a broader perspective on connections to marine tourism destinations across the ASEAN region. In addition, the team assessed coastal ecosystems, marine habitats, and biodiversity that could serve as key attractions for visitors.
Furthermore, this activity provides baseline information and data for sustainable ecotourism planning, marine conservation, and the development of a tourism sector that respects nature, local culture, and environmental sustainability. The initiative also contributes to national efforts to promote the blue economy as an important pathway for the economic and social development of Timor-Leste.
The activity involved a HACOSTA team of three members, an INCT team of three members, and two international researchers from Universitas Udayana (UNUD-Bali) specializing in ecotourism and marine sciences. This collaboration is important for sharing experiences, scientific knowledge, and innovative approaches to sustainable marine tourism development in Timor-Leste.
🌱 At the same time, Beni-Marine Timor-Leste continued to present and share information on its ongoing projects and activities in the Atecro community, Atauro, through marine education and marine sports programs. These initiatives also include marine conservation awareness, marine biodiversity monitoring, support for youth and local communities, and the promotion of sustainable tourism practices that contribute to the protection of marine resources and the well-being of coastal communities.
For Beni-Marine Timor-Leste, this activity represents an important opportunity to continue supporting scientific research and initiatives that promote ocean conservation and marine biodiversity protection. The data and information collected during this research will serve as an important foundation for future sustainable tourism planning, marine conservation efforts, and the engagement of local communities in Blue Economy activities.
Through initiatives such as this, Beni-Marine reaffirms its commitment to contributing to the protection of marine resources and promoting Atauro as an attractive, sustainable marine ecotourism destination that benefits local communities, the environment, and future generations. 🌊💙
