Great partnerships and participation from the schools towards a sustainable and healthy environment.

As part of , students across Tongatapu took centre stage learning about climate action in classrooms, then stepping out to protect their environment through real, hands-on action.

Through school visits led by Tonga’s Department of Environment and supported by the Ridge to Reef (R2R) Project, young people explored the importance of caring for their land, oceans, and natural resources building awareness that connects directly to Tonga’s future.
The learning didn’t stop there. Students joined communities in beach clean-ups and mangrove restoration, turning knowledge into action and showing that even small steps can make a big difference for climate resilience.

A big shoutout to all partners, schools, and youth champions driving change from the ground up proving that safeguarding our planet starts locally but impacts globally.
The Tonga R2R project is supported by UNDP and the Global Environment Facility in partnership with the Ministry of Meidecc - Tonga.

Recognizing the importance of strengthening the wellbeing, resilience and emotional support systems available to caregivers.

Today we had the opportunity to conduct the second meeting on Psychosocial Support with qualified counselors, where we discussed the pilot implementation of a caregiver-focused support program.

With the support from Tonga Safe and Resilient for Children we look forward to seeing the positive impact this program will have in supporting caregivers and promoting mental health and wellbeing for all.

πŸ“š MSS Capacity Building Training Continues in Κ»Eua

The Minimum Service Standards (MSS) 2025 Capacity Building Training continues in the beautiful island of Κ»Eua, with Senior Officers Tevita and Sofia Heimuli (QAD) leading awareness and training sessions for education officers and school principals.

The training brought together principals from both Government and Non-Government schools, providing them with a comprehensive overview of the latest MSS 2025, recently approved by Cabinet.

Participants were especially pleased to:
βœ… Receive hard copies of the MSS 2025 document
βœ… Learn that the standards are also available online
βœ… Take part in formal capacity-building sessions to better understand and implement the standards in their schools

Strengthening understanding of the MSS is an important step towards improving the quality and consistency of education across Tonga.

This initiative is made possible through the Save the Children Australia (SCA) – Global Partnership for Education (GPE) Programme in Tonga, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Training (MET) under the SCG T3 component.

A strong and promising start for the development of the MET Gender Policy.

Today marked the inaugural meeting of the Gender Policy Technical Working Group (TWG), bringing together key stakeholders from across government and the non-government sector to begin the collaborative process of drafting a Gender Policy for the Ministry of Education and Training.

We were privileged to have the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), including the WAGED Division, alongside representatives from non-government stakeholders, contributing their expertise, experiences, and perspectives to this important initiative.

The development of this policy is made possible through the support of Save the Children Australia (SCA) under the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) System Capacity Grant (SCG) Tranche 3 component. The evidence and data highlighting the need for this policy have been drawn from the Education Sector Analysis (ESA), ensuring that the policy is grounded in research and reflects the realities and priorities of Tonga's education sector.

Mālō 'aupito to everyone who joined today's discussions. This is an important first step towards building a more inclusive, equitable, and supportive education system for all.
