✨ Off to Bhutan! ✨

This month, I’ll be presenting my practice-based work at the 19th Biennial Conference of the International Association of Special Education (IASE) at Royal Thimphu College, Bhutan.

My poster presentation introduces Layered Narrative Accessibility (LNA), a framework that explores how accessibility can be embedded into storytelling itself, not simply as an add-on or afterthought.

For those who have been keeping up with our work, this concept was developed through a Trinidad and Tobago theatre production (performed at the Toronto Fringe Festival, 2025). The project examines how linguistic, cognitive, sensory, cultural, and experiential supports can work together to help audiences understand, engage with, and participate in stories in meaningful ways.

At the heart of this work is a simple idea:

♥️ Access to meaning requires more than access to space.

As part of the project, I developed a range of accessibility resources including plain language materials, large print formats, audio descriptions, accessibility guides, and examples of colour-coded captioning and audience orientation supports.

If you'd like to learn more, explore the project and accessibility resources on our website:

I'm excited to share Caribbean perspectives on accessibility, inclusion, and participation with colleagues from around the world and to continue learning from the incredible work being done internationally.

🧠 Processing new information takes time, and that is perfectly okay.

✨ For individuals with intellectual disabilities, living in and internalizing new concepts is often a marathon, not a sprint.

It requires patience, repetition, and a whole lot of grace. When things feel difficult, the most powerful tool we have is a growth mindset.

It’s the gentle reminder that we don’t have to learn things instantly to make progress. It’s about celebrating the small wins and embracing the journey, even when the road is steep. Things are going to be difficult, but here’s the beautiful truth: we can do difficult things. 🌱

💪 Let’s shift our focus from how fast we learn to how far we can go when we refuse to give up.

🌱 When a child is overwhelmed, frustrated, anxious, or dysregulated, learning takes a back seat. In those moments, we may need to step away from the academic goal and focus on regulation first.

🌈 Co-regulation creates the conditions that make learning possible.

A calm, connected adult can help a child find their footing again through patience, empathy, and support. Once a child feels safe and regulated, their brain is far more available for problem-solving, communication, and learning.

Connection before correction. Regulation before expectation.

🌱 This is how I turn the generic "good job" into an intentional ritual where I not only catch my kid being good, but I catch them growing... 🌱

It’s just 2 minutes of fully present, mindful connection where we review the small improvements and positive habits they are building.

Why this shifts everything:

✨ It moves the focus from the action to their identity ("I am someone who grows").

✨ It creates a safe space where they don’t have to misbehave to get undivided attention.

✨ It builds metacognition, helping them actually notice their own progress.

Give it a try:

1️⃣ Pick the right time: Keep it low-pressure.

2️⃣ Be specific: Don't just say "you were good." Name the exact habit.

3️⃣ Focus on effort: Highlight the improvement, not perfection.

It takes less than five minutes but builds a lifetime of confidence. 🤝

🌈 Revision doesn’t have to feel repetitive or draining…it can be dynamic, flexible, and even a little playful 🎶

In this video, you’ll see us revising spelling and vocabulary for a new phonics blend we've learned...tasks that can feel especially challenging or tedious for many children.

It’s not just about the strategy, it’s about knowing the child. What keeps them engaged? What supports their focus? What helps the learning stick?

By incorporating music, movement, and a mix of techniques, revision becomes less about memorizing and more about engaging with the material in meaningful ways.

Revision works best when it’s not rigid. Giving yourself permission to explore different approaches can help break the monotony, improve retention, and make the process feel far more manageable.

Find what works for you, stay flexible, and let revision meet you where you are ✨

📞 Featured in this video is the Toobaloo 📞 a handheld “whisper phone” designed to support reading fluency and speech development.

Created by a teacher, this simple yet powerful tool allows children to hear their own voice clearly as they read or speak softly into it, providing immediate auditory feedback.

This helps learners self-monitor key aspects of fluent reading, including: pronunciation, pacing, phrasing and expression.

Key features & benefits:

📞 Auditory feedback that supports self-correction in real time

📖 Enhances reading fluency, phonics, and speech articulation

🏫 Ideal for classroom reading centers or independent practice

🧠 Supports learners with dyslexia, ASD, and speech or language needs

💪 Lightweight, durable, non-toxic, and child-friendly design

A simple tool that makes a big impact on confident, independent reading ✨

🗣️ The sound of productivity isn’t always quiet. Sometimes it sounds like humming. Sometimes repeating sounds. Sometimes little vocalizations while working.

To many adults, it can seem distracting… but for some neurodivergent learners, this is actually how focus happens.

These vocalizations (often called vocal stimming) can help with regulation, concentration, and thinking through tasks. The noise isn’t getting in the way of learning, it’s helping make learning possible.

When we understand the purpose behind behaviours, we stop asking “How do we make it stop?” and start asking “How can we support it?”
