The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) has been recognized in the 2025 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, emerging as the only University in Tanzania to qualify for this international sustainability assessment.
In the 2025 rankings, NM-AIST is placed 64th in Africa out of 97 Universities and 1,363rd globally out of 1,741 Universities worldwide.
This milestone reflects NM-AIST’s continued dedication to excellence in science, technology, and sustainable development.

“On December 18, 2025, The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) proudly hosted delegates from the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) for a strategic dialogue on strengthening linkages between academia and industry, with a focus on academia’s engagement in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The discussions highlighted key areas of collaboration between NM-AIST, TCRA, and ITU, including advancing research, fostering innovation, and exploring emerging technologies to drive sustainable development.

Vice Chancellor Receives SHIMMUTA Tournament 2025 Trophies
NM-AIST Vice Chancellor Prof. Maulilio Kipanyula congratulated the Institution’s sports teams for their commendable performance during the SHIMMUTA 2025 competitions.
Prof. Kipanyula praised the teams for their discipline, teamwork, and commitment in representing NM-AIST with excellence. He made the remarks while receiving the SHIMMUTA Northern Zone Champions Trophy and the overall SHIMMUTA Tournament 2025 trophy, which were won during the tournament held in Morogoro Region.
He also acknowledged the outstanding performance of the NM-AIST Queens Netball Team, who emerged as First Runners-Up in the competition.
Prof. Kipanyula urged the teams and their leaders to begin early preparations for the next competition season, emphasizing the importance of consistency, strategic planning, and continuous
training to sustain and improve performance.

Useful Tools for Open Research at the Digital Hub for Open Research in East Africa.
On 17 December 2025, the Digital Hub for Open Research in East Africa conducted a capacity-building training session focused on Useful Tools on Open Research, bringing together researchers, academics, and research support staff to enhance open research practices in the region.
The training aimed to strengthen participants’ understanding of digital tools that promote research transparency, collaboration, data sharing, and accessibility. Through guided discussions and practical demonstrations, participants were introduced to platforms and resources that support open data management, open-access publishing, research visibility, and ethical knowledge sharing.

An Inspiring Encounter: Values, Patriotism, and the Future of Samia Scholarship Extended DS/AI+
The Samia Scholarship Extended for Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Allied Sciences (DS/AI+) training session became a moment of inspiration and reflection as beneficiaries engaged with Col. Joseph Simbakalia.
Simbakalia emphasized that true academic and professional success is built on discipline, integrity, commitment, and patriotism—not intelligence alone. He encouraged scholars to uphold ethical values, remain focused on their goals, and recognize their responsibility to contribute to national development through knowledge and innovation.
Dr. Judith Leo, Dean CoCSE Acting Deputy Academic, Research, and Innovation, commended Col. Simbakalia for his impactful message, noting that his experience and patriotism offer a powerful example to the next generation of data scientists and AI innovators.
Through the Samia Scholarship DS/AI+, beneficiaries are nurtured to become not only technically skilled professionals, but also leaders shaping Tanzania’s digital future.

Prof. Park Ho Koon, a Member of the International Advisory Board (IAB), paid a courtesy visit to The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST).
On 16 December 2025, During his visit, Prof. Park congratulated NM-AIST on its significant scientific initiatives, including the establishment of the NM-AIST Centre of Excellence for Renewable and Clean Energy, the positioning of NM-AIST as a regional hub for emerging digital technologies, and the successful implementation of the Waste-to-Wealth Programme.
Prof. Park also stated the importance of excellence in science and technology, with particular emphasis on Mathematics and Physics, and highlighted the need for attracting and retaining leading experts in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence to support advanced research and innovation.
The Vice Chancellor of NM-AIST, Prof. Maulilio Kipanyula, emphasized the importance of strengthening collaboration with academic and industry partners in Korea, particularly through staff and student exchange programmes and industry placements, as a means of enhancing national and regional competitiveness.
Prof. Kipanyula further noted that capacity building in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and related disciplines is a national priority, aimed at supporting the development of Tanzania’s digital economy. During the courtesy call, the Vice Chancellor also highlighted key institutional achievements, including strategic collaborations and the development of patented intellectual property.
