While you've been the primary teacher in your child's life for the first few years, it's time to broaden his horizons and let others help him develop into the smart, confident and respectful adult you know he'll become one day. While the school's first responsibility to its students may be academic, the job doesn't end there. When you send your youngster off to school, think about all the ways the staff and students influence your child. According to Irene Shere, Director of the Early Childhood Consultation Center, "The way that teachers interact with children and the way that teachers encourage interactions between children affect each child's development in important ways."

ACADEMIC POTENTIAL

Ideally, the school's role is to bring each student to her individual, maximum academic potential. While its effectiveness may vary from school to school, it's not enough to teach the ABCs and 123s and call it a day. A significant amount of schoolwork throughout the grades is dedicated to helping children become expert problem solvers and solution-seekers, skills that will come in handy in just about every personal and professional aspect of a child's adult life. Therefore, in addition to an academic skill, problem solving is an essential life skill. PARENTS ROLE IN RAISING A CHILD 23/03/2019

Parents roles in developing a child
Parents have a vital role in the emotional development of their children. Parents can help their children learn how to express their feelings through instructing, modeling, and guiding them in applying the skills of emotional management. As a parent, helping children with their feelings can both help them feel better and reduce behavior problems. Children who are able to manage their emotions often experience more positive feedback from others and are more successful in everyday life.

School Development

School development is a systematic approach to change at the school level designed to guide and focus a school towards the achievement of its mission - enhanced student learning. Developed within the context of both the provincial and district strategic education plans, a School Development Plan reflects the uniqueness of the local school environment. The Newfoundland and Labrador School Development Model is a results oriented process that involves collective reflection, analysis, problem solving, planning, and continuous improvement leading to the attainment of specific school goals.

The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development provides two school development models to accommodate the size of the teaching staff in schools and their subsequent capacity to implement the model. Schools choose the model applicable to them based on the number of teaching staff, including administration.

For schools with a teaching staff of 13 and more, please choose the School Development Model.

For schools with a teaching staff of 12 or less, please choose the Small School Model.
