You will be required to study Chinese if you receive a Chinese Government Scholarship, aka CSC scholarship (a special scholarship program from China Scholarship Council for foreign students), no matter what language your program is in, i.e. students can choose to study in English or in Chinese.

If your program is in English, and you’re a CSC scholarship participant, you will have 4 mandatory Chinese classes: Elementary Chinese, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. These are mandatory Chinese classes, which have to be taken before you graduate. Even if you have an HSK certificate, you will still be required to take these classes. No exceptions.

But if your program is in Chinese, and you’re a CSC scholarship participant, you will have to go through a 1 year Chinese program before you start your actual degree program, for e.g. 1 year Chinese + 3 years Master’s, or 4 years Bachelor’s, or 4 years PhD. At the end of your 1 year Chinese program, you will be required to sit the HSK exam and get level 4 or 5, depending on the requirements your school has.
