Cortisol is the hormone produced when we feel stress or trauma. It can sit in the brain, literally damaging brain cells and preventing learning. This is why we do not pressure young children to learn things they are not ready for.
Kids do not "refuse to read" or try to "be stubborn" about learning because it is fun. These are signs that your child is feeling too stressed. Take a step back and go play!

Did you know that drumming can be a part of your literacy instruction and your Math class too? Drums need not be brought out for music alone, we can use drums, even make-shift ones for a vast number of activities! All our limbs must be coordinated to function simultaneously when playing the drums. If you are right-handed, it's likely that you don't use your left hand very often. To coordinate and strengthen your non-dominant limbs, your brain must use your non-dominant side.
Imagine all that brain activity, we add another task, it is always a thrill to watch what a little bit of fun can do to our learning!

When given hands-on resources to aid in their grasp of the concepts being taught in class, children are much more engaged. What an observer would mistake for simple play and fun is much more. You might be astonished by the degree of participation taking place in these classes. Not only do teachers encounter greater language and vocabulary levels, but the most rewarding byproduct of such an environment is the student taking ownership of their learning, just because they enjoy it!
