Chama cha Wataalamu wa Magonjwa ya Viungo na Misuli (Rheumatology) tarehe 14 Mei 2026 kimefanya Mkutano wa Sita wa Magonjwa ya Viungo na Misuli kwa Watoto Afrika katika Chuo Kikuu cha Afya na Sayansi Shirikishi Muhimbili (MUHAS), ukiwa na kaulimbiu “Upatikanaji wa Huduma za Afya kwa Wote: Tukiungana kwa Afya Bora ya Viungo.”

Mkutano huo umewakutanisha wataalamu wa afya, watafiti, watunga sera  kutoka Afrika na maeneo mengine duniani kwa lengo la kuimarisha huduma za matibabu ya magonjwa ya viungo na misuli kupitia ubunifu, elimu na ushirikiano.

Akizungumza kwa niaba ya Mganga Mkuu wa Mkoa  wa Dar es Salaam, wakati wa ufunguzi wa mkutano huo, Dkt. Gunini Kamba aliwashukuru waandaaji kwa kuendelea kuhamasisha tafiti na utoaji wa huduma za magonjwa hayo, hususan kwa watoto. Alisema Wizara ya Afya inaendelea kutoa ufadhili na kuandaa wataalamu zaidi ili kuboresha huduma nchini Tanzania.

Mwenyekiti wa Kamati ya Maandalizi kutoka MUHAS, Prof. Francis Furia, alisema bado kuna upungufu mkubwa wa wataalamu wa magonjwa ya viungo na misuli duniani, hali inayosababisha wagonjwa wengi kukosa huduma na uchunguzi sahihi kwa wakati. Aliongeza kuwa mkutano huo umewezesha wataalamu wa afya kupata mafunzo yatakayosaidia kuongeza uwezo wa utambuzi na matibabu ya mapema.

Kwa upande wake, Rais wa Chama cha Wataalamu wa Magonjwa ya Viungo na Misuli, Dkt. Ayodele Fayele, alisisitiza umuhimu wa serikali kuendelea kuwekeza katika mafunzo ya madaktari bingwa wa watoto pamoja na kuingiza huduma hizo kwenye mfumo wa bima ya afya ili kupunguza gharama za matibabu kwa wagonjwa.

Naye Prof. Karim Manji alisema ushirikiano wa wataalamu kutoka nchi mbalimbali za Afrika kupitia mtandao wa PAFLAR unapaswa kuimarishwa zaidi kupitia ufundushaji na mitaala  ili kuongeza uelewa kwa jamii na kuboresha huduma za magonjwa ya viungo na misuli kwa watoto barani Afrika.

MUHAS HOSTS FOGARTY ACTING DIRECTOR TO DISCUSS RESEARCH,TRAINING, AND PARTNERSHIPS

Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) hosted Dr. Peter Kilmarx, Acting Director of the Fogarty International Center, for discussions aimed at strengthening research partnerships and advancing global health collaboration. Dr.Kilmarx was accompanied by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Tanzania Country Director, Dr. Mahesh Swaminathan.

During the meeting, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Consultancy, Prof. Bruno Sunguya, presented an overview of National Institutes of Health (NIH)- sponsored projects at MUHAS and highlighted the University’s strategic direction in research, innovation, and capacity building.

Speaking at the meeting, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Appolinary Kamuhabwa, expressed appreciation for the continued support provided by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He noted that the support has contributed significantly to capacity building, curriculum development, and strengthening research at the University, while emphasizing that the ongoing initiatives are expected to bring meaningful impact to the people of Tanzania.

Prof. Kamuhabwa further reaffirmed MUHAS’ commitment to ensuring that all funding is utilized effectively and responsibly. He highlighted that the University has established strong systems for transparency and accountability in financial management and continues to maintain a clean audit record, with audit reports regularly shared with funding partners.

In his remarks, Dr. Kilmarx commended MUHAS for successfully bringing together institutions and partners, describing it as a strong demonstration of collaboration, solidarity, and shared commitment to advancing health research. He alsoemphasized the importance of training and capacity building in addressing community health challenges and strengthening health systems.

The meeting also featured an open discussion session with trainees, researchers, grantees, and representatives from research institutions, higher learning institutions, specialized and teaching hospitals, as well as non-governmental and public health organizations.

The session, chaired by Prof. Appolinary Kamuhabwa, provided an opportunity for participants to engage with Dr. Kilmarx and discuss various research-related issues, partnerships, and opportunities for collaboration aimed at strengthening health research and capacity building in Tanzania.

Makamu Mkuu wa Chuo Kikuu cha Afya na Sayansi Shirikishi Muhimbili (MUHAS), Prof. Appolinary Kamuhabwa, amekutana na Wahadhiri wa Heshima (Honorary Faculty) katika kikao maalum kilicholenga kutathmini mafanikio ya Chuo, kujadili vipaumbele vya kimkakati vya sasa, na kubaini maeneo ya ukuaji na maboresho kwa maendeleo endelevu ya MUHAS.

Katika kikao hicho, Wahadhiri wa Heshima walipokea taarifa kuhusu maendeleo ya programu za taaluma, mifumo ya tafiti, miradi inayofadhiliwa, pamoja na mchango wao katika shughuli za ufundishaji chuoni. Wahadhiri hao walieleza manufaa wanayopata kupitia ushiriki wao MUHAS, ikiwemo upatikanaji wa ruzuku za tafiti, ufadhili wa masomo, mafunzo ya kitaaluma, na fursa za kujenga mitandao ya kitaaluma na kitafiti.

Aidha, Wahadhiri wa Heshima walipongeza uongozi wa Chuo kwa kuthamini mchango wao na kutoa mapendekezo mbalimbali ya kuendeleza MUHAS, ikiwemo kuimarisha matumizi ya teknolojia katika sera za afya, kupanua ushirikiano wa kitaifa na kimataifa, kuboresha mazingira ya kufundishia, kuandaa mafunzo maalum ya ufundishaji kwa Wahadhiri wa Heshima, MUHAS kuwa kitovu katika biashara ya matokeo ya tafiti (research commercialization) pamoja na machapisho ya kitaaluma na kuwawezesha wahadhiri wachanga kushiriki zaidi katika shughuli za tafiti.

Akizungumza katika kikao hicho, Prof. Kamuhabwa aliwashukuru Wahadhiri wa Heshima kwa mchango wao na kueleza kuwa MUHAS inaendelea kuimarisha miundombinu, kupanua kampasi, na kuboresha mazingira ya kujifunzia na kufundishia. Pia aliwahimiza kuendelea kudumisha ubora katika ufundishaji, kuwa na ushirikiano wa karibu katika idara wanazotoka  na kushirikiana na uongozi wa Chuo kuanzisha kozi fupi na mitaala mipya inayokidhi mahitaji ya sasa ya sekta ya afya.

Kwa upande wake, Naibu Makamu Mkuu wa Chuo – Tafiti na Ushauri wa Kitaalamu, Prof. Bruno Sunguya, aliwahimiza Wahadhiri wa Heshima kushiriki kikamilifu katika mafunzo ya muda mfupi yanayotolewa na Kurugenzi ya Tafiti, Machapisho na Ubunifu ili kuimarisha uwezo wao katika kufanya tafiti na kuandika machapisho ya kisayansi yenye ubora wa kimataifa.

The East African Centre of Excellence for Cardiovascular Sciences (EA-CoECVS) Phase II Project has held its 3 rd Project Steering Committee (PSC) Meeting to review the implementation progress of the project and provide guidance on key areas of implementation under Phase II of the project.

The meeting, held on 12 May 2026, was chaired by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Carolyne Nombo.

Among the key agenda items discussed was the progress of the EA-CoECVS Phase II Project, which aims to support cardiovascular skills development and improve service delivery infrastructure through the construction of a state-of-the-art Cardiac Teaching Hospital.

The Committee also discussed ongoing efforts to strengthen quality skills training and create an enabling learning environment through curriculum development, faculty training, research, and community outreach initiatives.

Speaking during the meeting, Prof. Nombo emphasized the importance of positioning the Centre as a regional hub for cardiovascular sciences by attracting more students and trainees from East African Community (EAC) member states. She advised the
project team to continue enhancing training programmes and curricula to increase the Centre’s regional competitiveness and impact.

She further highlighted the need to strengthen the visibility and branding of the project to ensure stakeholders and the wider community are well informed about the achievements and contributions of the EA-CoECVS initiatives.

Prof. Nombo also acknowledged the commitment and dedication demonstrated by the Project Implementation Team (PIT) in carrying out the project activities and achieving
the progress recorded so far.

Speaking during the meeting, the MUHAS Vice Chancellor, Prof. Appolinary Kamuhabwa, thanked the Permanent Secretary for the constructive guidance and directives provided. He assured the Committee that the recommendations and advice
shared during the meeting would be worked on to further strengthen the implementation and impact of the project.
